~ Before My Window to the World ~ by Ruth D. Gallant
As I sit here tonight
Before my window to the world
What crosses my mind is this
What do people see when they look at me?
Do they see beyond the outer layer
That of skin and eyes and hair
To that unseen part that lies within
A simple heart that keeps on beating
Do they only see the greying hair
The little limp that is sometimes there
The aging hands with wrinkled skin
Or do they see the me within?
I have often seen a sideways stare
When no one thought I was looking
I have often heard a whispered remark
When no one thought I was listening
I have seen the way others look at
me
Especially when I am using my buddies
You know those things they don't need
Like a cane or brace on my neck or knee
They often look and turn their head
Sometimes they frown instead of grin
It use to hurt for me to see
Just how others looked at me
Now it doesn't matter what they do
They can no longer make me blue
For with my Lord I have made a pact
To raise my head and smile back
In doing so I hope they'll see
That there is truly more to me
I will no longer hang my head in fear
Of what I see or sometimes hear
So tonight I write these words
Will they see beyond the outer layer
To the unseen me that lies within
That one heart that keeps on beating!
