Corners by Dee Ann E. L. Horvath

She is sunbeams and posies on a drizzly day
An award winning rose amongst weeds and hay
She is sweet and kind with a thoughtful mind
And maybe that is why she is being left behind

She tries everyday to be part of their play
To be part of the party would truly make her day
She is happy for any crumbs that might be sent her way
Vulnerable and exposed they use her in their petty horseplay

She tries her best to act happy and not frayed
But inside she is so very very lonely and afraid
I wish they weren't so full of their own self-doubt
To malign such loveliness is what treachery is all about

All I can do is pray each and everyday
That this rare and comely bouquet doesn't wither and fade
But instead will grow more vibrant with each passing day
Surpassing all those who denounce and treat her this way

It is heartbreaking for a mother to have to say
That true friendship one-day will come her way
Till then my daughter you will have to play
Alone in the corner at recess everyday

Hurtfully she will learn through childish play
Which ones are trustworthy
And which ones are better off keeping at bay
Till then corners will have to be this young lady's forte
