Deciding to take a short cut, Chet Kelly turned left. Even though it seemed out of his way it had less stop lights. He was already cutting it close for getting to work on time. And he knew that Captain Stanley's patients was next to nothing when it came to his crew coming to work late. As he drove down the boulevard he could tell he was in the older and less fancier part of LA. The building were mostly made of brick while red and white canopies hung above most of the store fronts. Stopping at a red light he took a second glance out his drivers side window. Then all without warning he spotted Nicci walking about fifty yards away from him. After making sure there was a cop waiting to bust him, he quickly made a U turn. Then pulling up to Nicci he stopped and opened the passangers side door. " Nicci get in." Startled by his voice Nicci stopped. Then realizing who it was that called her by name she refused his request. Without a word she began to run. Knowing that he couldn't let her get away Chet quickly got out of his VW bug and started to run after her " Nicci wait." he panted. He wasn't in as good as shape as he used to be. Closing in on his persuit, Chet reached out and grabbed Nicci by the arm. " Let me go." She demanded putting up a fight " No Nicci, your coming to the station with me." Chet declaired while dragging Nicci to his waiting VW. " NO I AINT GOING BACK." She screamed Stopping at the passangers side Chet studied Nicci for a moment. Her blood shot eyes speaking loud and clear. " Nicci this isn't right." " Why the fuck would I care." Nicci blurted out. Still fighting." Becides You don't know shit, so shut the fuck up." Nicci barked " No I dont' know a whole lot and believe me this isn't the first, but you don't know either." Chet remarked. " I bet you don't know you father's worried sick about you. Or that he jumps every time the tones go off scared to death that it's you that's hurt. And forget about eating and sleeping, those two things are luxuries that he hasn't been getting." Chet ended as he noticed a tear threating to fall from Nicci's hazing eyes. " So I don't care." Nicci said ineffectively wiping away the tear that had won the fight " I don't believe that, not for a minute, and niether do you Nicci." Chet concluded. " Now if you dont want to go to the station for your father or for yourself that's fine, but could you go for me? I'm going to have to score some major brownie points with the captain, I'm almost thirty minutes late." With her stomach turning, Nicci gave up on any fight, and without another word she climbed in the passangers side door. As Chet continued to drive to work, Nicci could not shake the queasiness inside. " Mr. Kelly you need to pull over." She managed with her hand covering her mouth. Her stomach was rising into her throat and she knew that she was monents away from losing the contents of her stomach. Seeing she was on the verge, Chet quickly pulled over. As soon as the car came to a stop, Nicci bolted out and headed for the nearest trash can with Chet following close behind. .......... "Boy I wouldn't want to be in Kelly's shoes when Capt gets done with him." Johnny said seeing that Chet was almost forty five minutes late. " Okay here's the days chores. Gage, DeSoto I want you to work in the dorm. Stoker you and Lopez can work on the hoses. " Stanley said passing out the orders." And I'll deal with Kelly when he gets here." With the look on their Captain's face Johnny spoke up." Latrine duty huh Capt." " If he's lucky that's all he'll get." Captain Stanley said sternly. .......... In the dorm both Johnny and Roy worked, " Man Capt's pissed." Johnny said. " Well can you blame him? he just gave us all a lecture on being late , then Kelly pulls this stunt. " Roy said." I'm surprised Capt is as cool as he was. You know he could really do some damage, he could suspend Kelly you know." Seeing his Captain out of the corner of his eye, Johnny looked up. " Hey Capt, almost done." Johnny assured. " What else you got for us?" " Oh nothing, I just thought you would like to here something interesting, Kelly's here." Stanley said " Yeah and what interesting have to do with Kelly being here." Roy said " Oh that part isn't interesting, but the fact that Nicci's with him is." Stanley said with a slight grin At the mere mention of her name, Roy shot out of the room with Johnny and his Captain close behind. " Nicci." Roy said entering the room." Oh Nicci thank God, I've been worried sick about you, Where?...." Roy started walking to Nicci for a hug, only to have her withdraw away from him " Dad don't." Nicci said flattly." Just back off." He wanted so much to take her in his arms but deciding it was best Roy stopped. For a moment he studied Nicci's trembling body. Her face was pale, her eyes glazed over with red veins going through them. And becides the slight pudge she looked frail. " Nicci why dont you sit down. Are you hungry? I can whip you up something real quick." Roy asked " No I'm not hungry." She said Then turning she walked over to the empty chair that was sitting at the corner of the table and sat down. Taking his seat at the opposite corner to where he was facing her, Roy once again studied her. In his profession he had seen this look before. " Nicci are you okay? Are you sick?" Roy asked seeing that she was having difficulty keeping her eyes open " I'm fine, Just leave me alone." Nicci said barely over a whisper " Roy." Chet spoke." She threw up on the way here. Johnny who also picked up on the signs took Nicci gently by the wrist to feel for palse." Roy, I cant get an accurate palse, it's to fast, but it's way past a hundred." Roy was now in between being a paramedic and being a father. While parts of him didn't want to believe that his daughter was using. His profession was telling him that she held many of the symptoms of someone coming down from a high. " Nicci." Roy started." What did you take?" Roy asked. " I....I ain't taking anything." Nicci stuttered. " Nicci come on, I know the symptoms." Roy said his voice littered with concern." I want to help you Nicci but you have to tell me. What did you take?" " If you must know I took some speeders, no big deal." Nicci said now having trouble holding her head up." Just tired.....need some sleep." Witnessing the scene from in front of the sink Captain Stanley walked over to Roy and spoke." Hey pal, Why dont you and Johnny run her over to Rampart to get looked at , I'll call in a still alarm okay." ........... Soon Roy was parking the squad behind Rampart. Seeing that Nicci was almost a sleep Roy got out and scooped her in his arms. Then quickly he and Johnny walked into Rampart." Hey Doc." Roy said seeing Brackett in the hall with Dr. Early. " Hey Roy and Johnny what do you got?" Brackett asked " This is my daughter Nicci. She may have over dosed on some speed." Roy said worriedly " Okay bring her in ." ......... Two hours later........ Watching Roy and Johnny walk into the day room Captain Stanley could see the worried look on Roy's face." Hey pal how is she?" Stanley asked " She'll be okay, She didn't OD like I had thought. And according to the Doc, there wasn't to much in her system. She'll just have to sleep it off. Jo came up to Rampart and picked her up." Roy said as Dwyer walked in. " Hey what are you doing here?" " Capt called me in to take your place." Dwyer said Looking at his Captain Roy questioned " Capt?" " Roy you need to be home with your family right now, They need you." Stanley said " Are you sure Capt?" Roy asked. " Sure I'm sure. now beat it, shifts over anyway in about three hours." Captain Stanley said " Okay, thanks Capt." Roy said feeling his spirits rise as he headed for the door. Then stopping he turned around. " Hey, I know things aren't very good right now, especially what happened between Sherry and Nicci. but you see Nicci's turning fifteen this Saturday. And I and Jo were talking about throwing her a birthday party and well..." Roy said being interupted by his Captain " Say no more, we'll be there." Captain said with a reassuring smile. With a smile Roy left the station ..........Four hours later......... Sitting next to Nicci while she slept. Roy took her hand in his. This was the part of the fathers love that was often the hardest. Looking down he didn't know what was going on inside her head, but it was enough for her to push everyone away. " Hey Roy how's it going, Jo told me you were down here." " Oh hi, Johnny, Sorry I didn't hear you come in." Roy said looking up at his partner. " That's okay, how's she doing." Johnny asked concerned for the situation " Oh she's okay, palse has slowed to normal. Like the doctor said she just needs to sleep it off." " That's good." Johnny said TBC |
