Johnny finally pulled up in his Land Rover at his apartment complex. "Man am I tired." Johnny said to himself before drifting off to sleep with his head leaning on the steering wheel in his Land Rover, only to be awoke by his neighbor Mr Rogers. "Good morning Mr.Gage, you look tired. You must of had a rough night last night."Mr Rogers said noticing Johnny was dressed in his uniform. "Yeah it was rough, we had six structure fires,two heart attack victims and one spaced out chick."Johnny explained climbing out of his Land Rover. "Oh I see,I wont keep you then."Mr.Rogers said waving goodbye to his neighbor. When Johnny entered his apartment it was half past nine in the morning. Boy no wonder I'm so tired, not even a hours sleep last night. Johnny thought staggering to his room. Johnny was so sleepy,he was asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. .............. When Johnny awoke it was about 6:00 in the evening. Man, I must have been dead to the world, I didn't even change out of my clothes. Johnny thought climbing out of his bed then heading to the bathroom to take a shower. I wonder what I should do today or what is left of today. Johnny thought to himself as he stood in the shower letting the hot water run down his tired body. When he was through he climbed out and put a towel around his middle then headed to the kitchen to get some dinner. Shit, I knew I forgot something. Johnny thought shutting the refrigerator door. I guess I better get dressed and go to the supermarket.Johnny added to his thoughts as he headed to his bedroom. Johnny grabbed a pair of jeans and a t-shirt out of his dresser. ......... He pulled up in the driveway at the Shop -n-Save. Lets see I need some Bread,Milk, Eggs, Coffee and something for supper,Johnny thought walking through the parking lot. Hey I wonder, could it be? no way I'm not that lucky. Johnny thought noticing a black Jeep parked near the entrance."Well hell there's only one way to find out." He said to himself while walking through the automatic doors. He then quickly scanned the front of the store while grabbing a cart. Hey, I know I'll start at one end of the store and look down each aisle,Johnny thought heading for the dog food aisle. One be one he looked down each and every aisle with no luck. Johnny, now I know you've snapped your cap,Johnny thought as he walked to the produce section. Do you know just how many black jeeps there are in LA alone? Johnny asked himself. I knew it, I wonder if I sould say hi,Johnny added watching Amanda from a far Just then Amanda turned around and saw Johnny."Hi Mr.Gage." Amanda greeted walking up next to him with a smile. "Hi there ." "How are you doing, Mr.Gage?" "Please call me Johnny."Johnny said putting his hand on his chest. "Ok then Johnny,How are you doing?" "Fine fine, and you?" "Oh I doing okay, just doing some shopping." "Oh yeah me too." " I guess you're not planning on spending to much, are you?" Amanda remarked with a grin looking down at his empty cart "No,I guess not ." Johnny replied also with a grin. "I don't know about you, but I get so busy with work and class sometimes I forget to go shopping."Amanda explained looking up at Johnny. "Yeah I know what you mean.I spend more time at the station then I do at my apartment." Johnny and Amanda stood there talking for awhile, losing all track of time. "ATTENTION SHOPPERS:THE STORE WILL BE CLOSING IN FIVE MINUETES,PLEASE BRING YOUR FINAL PURCHASES TO THE FRONT,THANKYOU." The loud speaker announced. "Well I guess I can forget about doing any shopping tonight."Johnny said looking at his watch. "Yeah somehow I don't think I'll be getting much shopping done either." "Would you like to go and get a bite to eat?"Johnny asked "Sure that sounds good." "ATTENTION SHOPPERS:THE STORE IS NOW CLOSED."The loud speaker announced. "Well I guess that's our cue."Johnny said taking her by the hand and heading to the front door. ....... "So where do you want to go?"Johnny asked walking through the parking lot with Amanda at his side then stopping at her jeep "I don't know,Where do you want to go?" "Pizza."They both suggested in unison. "Okay I guess Pizza it is." Johnny replied as they both began to laugh. "Okay I'll follow you there."Amanda said climbing into her Jeep. "Okay."Johnny said heading to his Land Rover. ........... "Hi welcome to Donnies Pizzarea, how many people in your party?"The Hostess asked. "Just two."Johnny announced. "Would you care for smoking or not?" "Uh,Non smoking please."Johnny replied looking down at Amanda seeing her nod her head in agreement "Okay follow me." The Hostess requested as she took two menus out of the pile that sat on the counter. They followed the Hostess to a small table in the back of the dinning room. "Your Waitress will be with you in a moment." The Hostess stated as she left the two alone. "What do you like on your pizza." Johnny asked looking over the menu. " I like just about anything except for anchovies."Amanda replied. "Oh me neither, I think there discusting I mean fish belong in a pond not on a pizza"Johnny said. "You got that right."Amanda agreed. "Are you two ready to order?"The Waitress asked sitting two glasses of water on the table. "Yeah,I think so."Johnny replied Johnny then gave their order to the Waitress. "Okay it'll be about fifteen minuetes."The Waitress announced as she took the menus and walked away. "So have you lived in LA long?"Johnny asked taking a sip of water "Hm,I guess I've been here for about eight years,I was born in Supply North Carolina,.What about you, where are you from?" "Me,I'm from a small Reservation in Montana."Johnny replied "Oh yeah that sounds neat, sounds like we both came from the country." "Yeah sure does."Johnny said as the waitress walked up with their drinks "So tell me, you have any family here in LA?"Johnny asked. "No,My parents were killed in a car crash almost nineteen years ago.I was four years old."Amanda said playing with her straw that was floating around in her glass "Oh,I'm so sorry to hear that." Way to go you Idiot, Johnny thought to himself to looking at Amanda. "Oh that's ok, don't be sorry you didn't know. I don't think about them to often. Becides they've been gone for so long I don't really even remember what they looked like. I have pictures that reminds me, but I can't remember them in my mind." "So, Where did you grow up?" "No where in particular,I moved around a lot growing up after my parents died. And with no family members willing to take on the responsibility of another mouth to feed, there was no choice but to go to foster care. " "You mean your family just turned there back on you?" "I guess you can say that but it really wasn't their fault. Times were hard and money was tight they had there own families. Anyway I met some nice foster families some of them were not so nice. In fact I was almost adopted once, but then my foster mother found out she was pregnant so they changed their minds about me." "It must of been hard on you." "It was a little hard, but again I can't blame them I know they tried to have a baby for eight years and the lord finally answered their prayers. So the next day I moved to Oregon I never saw that family again." "Sounds like you moved around a lot." "I guess. I think the longest I lived with a family was about 6 months. Heck it got to where I wouldn't even un pack after a move cause I didn't know how long I was going to be there."Amanda chuckled "Not much time to build a friendship." "No that's why value friends I have now." "Well I can understand that." Johnny said then added "Doesn't the courts know that it's hard on kids being bounced around from place to place, kids needs a stable enviroment and I've heard horror stories about foster homes." "Ya I think they do, but there's really nothing that they can do. I guess they try to monitor the homes but sometimes things get looked over. Like I said some of the homes I've been in was in are really good ones, some of them the families treated me differant especially if they had kids of their own like at Christmas or Birthdays sometimes they got a little rough phsically, but at least they fed me and put a roof over my head .I guess those families don't realize that those kids are victims." "Well you seem to have dealt with everything okay." "Yeah I did I still have hang ups, so tell me how's the guys at the station?" Amanda asked changing the subject. "Their fine, their still talking about the dinner you fixed the other day."Johnny replied "Oh yeah,is that a good thing?" "It's a very good thing, I think Marco's still amazed that you baked home made bread. I think he thought that in order to bake bread a person needs a huge kitchen or something." "So how long have you been a fire fighter?"Amanda asked "Oh I guess about six years. I've been a paramedic for about four years.How bout you?" "I guess I was twenty when I got my first assignment." "Well how how old are you now?" "I'm twenty three, I'll be twenty four in three weeks.Why how old did you think was." " I thought you were eighteen maybe nineteen." "Well thank you, your sweet." Before long they had finished eating their meal. They were enjoying each other so much,It took them a moment to realize the staff had started putting the chairs up on the tables. "I do believe we're getting kicked out again."Amanda remarked watching the manager lock the front door. "I believe you're right."Johnny agreed as they got up and headed for the door ..... "Sounds good, I live at 458 Oakland apartment G. Here I'll right it down for you." Amanda said taking a piece of paper out of her purse. "I'll be looking forward to seeing you again."Amanda said handing the paper to Johnny. "I'll be looking forward to seeing you too."Johnny replied noticing the the moonlight in her eyes. Just then a loud noise broke the silence that surrounded them ."Well I'll see you Saturday."Amanda said climbing up in her Jeep. "You bet Saturday at noon,I'll be there." .......... Johnny joined his Co-Workers in the kitchen at the station. "You guys will never guess what I did last night." Johnny announced heading for the coffee pot "Let me guess, you sat in the corner with a dunce cap on your head." Chet replied "You only wish, for your information Chester B. I had dinner with Amanda last night."Johnny said with a smirk patting Chet on the back. "No way."Chet replied looking at Johnny "Yes way, in fact we have a date Saturday." Johnny announced still smirking at Chet . "Oh yeah, where are you going to take her?"Roy asked taking a drink of his coffee. "Wouldn't you guys love to know?"Johnny replied trying to keep his friends in suspence. "Just be carefull, a girl that looks that good will tear your heart out. And I would be watching your wallet too."Chet remarked sitting at the table. "How do you know you don't know her." Johnny said "No but I know girls like her and there all the same Gold Diggers." "Well anyway lets go get some supplies."Roy suggested getting from the table stopping the conversation before it went to far "Sure thing Pally. Oh one more thing Kelly, eat your heart out. Your problem is you jealous." Johnny replied skipping out of the room . .......... "Hi guys, what ya need?"Dixie asked walking up to the nurses station. "Lets see, we need some Surrenges, normal Saline Solution,Splints,Some Ringers and 2 packs of 4x4s."Roy announced reading the list in his hand "Okay,no problem help yourself."Dixie replied "Hey Dix what are you doing."Johnny asked leaning on the desk "I'm writing out the trainees receipts." "Oh yeah."Johnny said looking down and spotting Amanda's ballance Just then a voice came over the Handy Talky. "Station 51, structure fire,6234 East Dunkin, 6234 East Dunkin,corner of Normat Drive,time out 10:58." "10-4 ,51 responding from Rampart." Roy announced as they headed to the squad. ............. They arrived at the scene to find a two story house fully engulfed. Captain Stanley jumped out of the Engine and walked over to the family that was standing next to a large oak tree. "Did everyone get out?"The Captain asking the man who was standing with his family. "Yeah we're all out." The man answered. "Are you sure?" The Captain asked "Yeah I'm sure,"The man assured Captain Stanley "Okay then, men let's knock it down. Chet and Marco get a couple inch and a halfs, Gage and DeSoto assist Kelly and Lopez "Stanley ordered turning his attention to the blaze. Just then something ran and grabbed the Captain's leg. Captain Stanley looked down to see a little red headed girl with tear filled eyes."What can I do for you?"Stanley asked kneeling down in front of the girl. "Please Mister,Please save her."The little girl cried fighting through her tears. "Save who?"Stanley asked wiping away a tear. "My Katie, she's still in there. I tried to find her but I couldn't she didn't come when I called her." The girl explained crying louder "Now Carrie, The fireman are to busy to look for Katie. You've got to understand that." The girls mother said while guiding the little girl away from the Captain Captain Stanley then looked up at the woman."I don't understand." "Katie is her kitten she got last month for her birthday."The woman explained Captain then looked back at the girl "I see, I am very sorry about your friend.We will do our very best to find her but I can't promise you we will and I can't risk my crews life for her."The Captain explained "Can you understand that?"Stanley added then placing his strong hand on her shoulder for confort "Yeah I understand."The girl replied looking down at the ground. Captain Stanley then got up and joined his men. And after about 45 minutes the fire was out and the men then started going through the rubble. "Hey Chet,Do you hear that?"Marco asked looking over at his dirty faced friend. "Hear what?"Chet asked looking back at Marco "I don't know it sounds like a scratching sound, It's coming from over here."Marco replied walking to the row of bushes next to the house. Marco then looked down while pushing the branches away with his arms."Hey Chet,would you come over here and look at this?"Marco asked "What'd ya find?"Chet asked walking over to Marco. They looked down to find a tiny Calico kitten that didn't look no more than a couple months old. Marco bent over and scooped up the lifeless kitten in his arms. "What do you think we should do, Is it alive?"Chet asked looking at the bundle in Marco's arms. "I don't know." Marco replied as they started walking to where Gage and DeSoto were. "Hey guys, what do ya think?"Marco announced walking up to the Paramedics. Roy and Johnny looked at the puff of fir that Marco had craddled in his arms. "I don't know."Johnny replied taking the lifeless kitten from Marco's arms. Then looking over the kitten Johnny said "It's alive but its suffered from smoke. Its not breathing very well it and has first and second degree burns on the paws." "Here lets try some O2."Roy suggested After just a few seconds the guys were able to let out a sigh of relief. Hearing the kitten let out a soft meow, then began to purr. "What's going on over here? You guys taking a break?"Captain asked walking up to his men seeing them gathered around the squad, Captain Stanley then looked down and saw what his men had done."Good job guys."Stanley said as he saw the kitten that Johnny held in his arms while Roy bandaged up the kittens four paws Stanley then scratched the top of the kittens head with his glove,"And you must be Ms. Katie."Stanley replied The kitten replied by batting at the Captains finger with her bandaged paw. "Well Ms.Katie,I know of a little girl who is very worried about you." Captain Stanley said taking the kitten from Johnnys arms. The Captain and the guys then walked up to the family that were still standing by the tree. Stanley then bent down in front of the little girl."Is this your friend you've been looking for?"Captain Stanley asked with a dirty faced smile "Oh yes, Oh yes my Katie." The girl cried holding out her arms. "Hold on there little lady, I think the best thing you can do for your friend is to take her to the vet. She's suffered from the smoke and has first and second degree burns on her paws."Stanley suggested looking up at the girls parents as he got up to his feet. "Thanks we sure will."The woman said taking the kitten from the Captains arms " Thank you so much, you guys really do go beyond the call of duty."The man said shaking Captains hand. "No problem."Stanley replied as he started following his crew to their vehicles. Just then Stanley was grabbed around the leg once again "Oh thanks mister."Carrie cried while rubbing her tears off on his turnout coat. "It's okay, I'm glad we were able to help your friend."Stanley said patting her on the back before leaving ..... "So where are you taking Amanda this Saturday?"Roy asked pulling into the station. "Oh,I'm taking her to the fair." "That sounds like fun." "I don't know, maybe I should've asked her to dinner instead. I don't even know if she likes to ride the rides." "Well if the fair don't work out, then take her out to dinner." "Yeah I guess I could. I just want Saturday to be perfect." Johnny replied as they entered the kitchen. Soon the shift was over and A shift was heading to thier homes "Well I guess I'll see you later."Johnny said heading to his Land Rover "Yeah,Catch ya later." .............. It was finally Saturday morning and Johnny woke up early. He wanted everything to be perfect. He made it into the bathoom to take his morning shower,and to get ready to go. After he was done, he made his way into the kitchen to get some coffee and breakfast. When he was done he went into his bedroom to get dressed. I guess these will do. Johnny thought taking a pair of blue jeans and T-shirt. 11:30 I better get going , I sure don't want to be late. Johnny thought as he looked at the clock on the nightstand. Lets see,where did I put her address? Johnny thought while starting to panic. "Okay don't panic Gage, just don't panic."Johnny said to himself looking at his watch. "Damb only 25 minutes, John you fool,where oh where did you put it? I know."Johnny said loudly snapping his fingers. Then walking over to the dirty clothes hamper "Great here it is." Johnny said taking the piece of paper out of the jeans he wore the night they ate pizza. Johnny then checked the mirror one more time before leaving. .......... Johnny walked into Amanda's apartment house with five minutes to spare. Boy, the apartments aren't marked very well."Johnny thought walking down the hallway. Johnny then knocked on the door that was marked Manager "Yeah can I help you?"The lady asked opening the door. "Yes,I'm looking for Amanda Cory." "She lives in Apartment G. Up the stairs,first door on your right." The lady grumbled as she slammed door in Johnnys face. "Well thank you."Johnny replied while turning to walk up the stairs This must be it.Johnny thought knocking on the door "Hi Johnny come on in." Amanda greeted while opening the door "I'm almost ready,I just have to put my shoes on." "No problem."Johnny replied checking out the small sleeping room "Hey,You're not moving are you?"Johnny asked noticing the boxes in the tiny room. "Oh no,I guess old habits die hard."Amanda replied walking up next to Johnny. "I see."Johnny said remembering what she told him about her past. "Well I guess I'm ready."Amanda announced putting her keys in the fanny pack around her waste. As they headed to Johnny's Land Rover,Johnny noticed her small framed figure underneath her blue jean mini skirt and red tank top All I can say is,Damb.he thought "Would you like to grab a bite to eat?"Johnny asked as they climbed into the Land Rover. "Oh no I'm not very hungry right now."Amanda replied admiring the slender body sitting next to her. "Okay,we'll get something later at the fair."Johnny suggested driving out of the parking lot ................ They walked up to the ticket booth at the fair. "How many tickets?"The lady at the booth asked "Two."Johnny replied holding up two fingers "Can I interest you in a bracelet, which entitles you to ride all the rides as many times as you wish untill 6:00." "How much are they?" "For two it'll be $20.00." "Sounds good.Thanks."Johnny said handing a $20 dollar bill to the lady. "It doesn't look very busy."Amanda said putting her bracelet on "Do you have a favorite ride you would like to go on first?"Johnny asked "Well,I like the Double Farris Wheel."Amanda replied "Let's do it then."Johnny said smiling as he took her hand. As the date went on they had managed to ride all the rides at least 2 times each. Only stopping long enough to get a drink and have their pictures taken at a booth Johnny even managed to win a stuffed Tweety Bird. "Its about four minutes till 6 o clock, what do you say we get something to eat?"Johnny suggested looking at his watch "Sure." They sat in front of a taco stand talking and enjoying each others company until the lights on the rides slowly started going out. "Boy nothing like wearing out our welcome." Johnny said "Yeah I guess." ......... "I hope you had a nice time I know I did."Johnny said as they walked through the parking lot "Oh I did,I had a great time. Thanks for Tweety." Amanda replied looking up smiling at Johnny. "Your very welcome, I just wish I won the bigger one." "Johnny that's okay this one's perfect. You do know that the best things in life are often the small things." With her simple words, Johnny for once in his life was speechless. oooooooooo-------oooooooooo Johnny pulled up at Amanda's Apartment. "Here I'll walk you in." Johnny said turning off the egnition He then climbed out and walked around to open the door for Amanda and headed inside the Apartment house. "I'd love to see you again."Johnny announced as Amanda unlocked the door of her apartment. "I'd love that too, but I really have to start studying my head off if I'm going to do well on the final exam in three of weeks."Amanda replied "Maybe you can come by the station this week and I can help you.I'm pulling three all nighters this week, and who knows maybe you can come along on a few runs with Roy and I, that is if it's ok with the Captain." Johnny suggested. "That would help me out a lot , if you're sure." "Great I work Monday,Wednesday, and Friday next week.You can come by and I'll study with you." "Thet sounds good, I have class till 2 o'clock and I work till 6 but I will be there shortly after." "Great,I'll see you then." As they stood there, Johnny's smile soon disappeared as he once again noticed her blue eyes.And without hesitating he leaned over and gave Amanda a quick kiss on the cheek before turning to leave. "Wait a minute Johnny Gage, you're not going to leave me like that."Amanda spoke softly grabbing his arm to stop him from leaving. She then reached up and touched his cheek with her hand. ,And Before Johnny knew it they were embracing each other with a long passionate kiss. "I'll see you monday Johnny Gage."Amanda said with a warm smile "I'll see you monday Amanda Cory."Johnny replied also with a warm smile just before leaving. TBC |
