DAMAI BEACH

Sarawak's premier beach resort area is at Damai Beach on Santubong Peninsula, 35 km from Kuching. Facing the South China Sea and backed by the verdant slopes of Mount Santubong, Damai Lagoon Resort, Santubong Kuching Resort and Holiday Inn Resort are three excellent hotels at Damai Beach. Apart from indulging in water sports, one can trek the jungle trails located behind the hotels on the lower slopes of Mount Santubong. There is also the challenging Mount Santubong Summit Trek, recommended only for those who are fit and agile. Opposite Darnai Beach is Satang Island with its Turtle Sanctuary.

Take white sand beaches lapped by the South China Sea, add rainforest walks and an imposing jungle -covered mountain and you have Damai. This is Sarawak's main beach resort area.

Once accessible only by river, Damai, on the Santubong Peninsula, is now just a 40 minutes drive from Kuching. And the drive is well worth it. Damai boasts three international-class resort hotels - the Holiday Inn Resort Damai Beach, Damai Lagoon Resort and Santubong Kuching Resort. Each has its own secluded beach, landscaped, free form swimming pool and offers jet skiing, water-skiing, windsurfing, mountain biking, tennis, squash and fitness centers.

Stretching over 124,000sq km, Sarawak is a land of rainforests and mighty rivers in Borneo. Dayaks, who form more than 40% of the population, are made up mainly of the Ibans, Bidayuhs and Orang Ulu. The natives represent almost 30 ethnic sub-groups, each having its own colourful customs and culture.
