Background History:
Dr. Esperanza Orion was born into a wealthy family of
scientists on Luna. Her father, Miguel Orion, was the
lead facilitator of the Biomedical College at Lunar
University, and her mother, Constantina Orion, was a
practicing nanosurgeon. She grew up in the lap of
luxury, attended the best schools money could buy,
and, in spite of her parents' money, attended Lunar
University on a full academic scholarship. Her keen
intellect quickly distinguished her among her
classmates. But her plans were nearly derailed in her
sophomore year, when at the age of 18 she became
acquainted with a certain smuggler, Shane O'Connor.
Shane was everything that Esperanza is not--
passionate, reckless, disorganized-- and perhaps the
sheer opposition of their personalities explains the
brief but torrid affair they enjoyed.
At first Shane thought Esperanza was a frigid cold
bitch who was attractive enough to merit a tumble, but
completely unsuitable for a real relationship. And at
first Esperanza thought Shane was a suicidal maniac
whose deathwish was only dwarfed by his ambition. As
it turns out, they were both right. Esperanza got
pregnant within the first three months of their
acquaintance.
Shane O'Connor was an old-fashioned young man; when he
found out that Esperanza was carrying his child, he
proposed on the spot, determined to do right by his
child and her mother in spite of the major monkey
wrench a married life would throw into his ambitions.
Esperanza turned him down outright and told him that
he needn't wait around on Luna for her to change her
mind--- she would be more than capable of supporting
their child on her own, and in any case didn't think
Shane was exactly husband or father material.
True to Shane O'Connor form, he got drunk and left
Luna, approximately in that order. Which might explain
why he blasted a hole the size of a small tank in the
Biomedical wing of Lunar University--- Classes had
been dismissed for the term, so it was really more of
a point to be made than any real attempt to hurt
anyone. It sure as hell made him feel better though,
even if it did confirm Esperanza's suspicion that
Shane would make a terrible father.
Not that she was much better of a mother. When her
daughter was born, she named her Isabella Orion. And
that was pretty much the end of her input for about
the first fourteen years. Esperanza realized early on
that Isabella, in spite of all her efforts, was simply
never going to be a quiet and dutiful child. She had
inherited too much of her father's temperament.
Esperanza tried to correct what she perceived as
deficiencies in her daughter's personality through a
progressive scale of withholding affection and
punishment that often bordered on emotionally abusive.
Finally she gave up and just ignored the girl
entirely.
Though Isabella had only seen Shane O'Connor four
times in her life, when she was fifteen she ran away
from home and stowed away aboard his ship. Though it
was a year before Esperanza learned of Isabella's
whereabouts, she made no attempt to try and find her
and generally considered it a blessing in disguise.
Now she could concentrate on her work and her own life
without the unwanted interruption of a willful,
disobedient child. Isabella did make several trips
back to Luna over the years, especially after Shane
gave her the Sovereign as an 18th birthday present.
But her brief visits with her mother were strained and
emotionally unfulfilling, and Esperanza always treated
her more like an inconvenience than a relative.
And so it continued, until she received word that
Isabella had been killed in an explosion off the Space
Station Tyr. Though her motives are largely unknown,
she surprisingly agreed to come to the Station to deal
with the aftermath of her daughter's death.
