About This Project

Documentation of the Development Process

The purpose of this website was to build a simple and uncluttered website for the contracting business. The main steps taken to achieve this objective include only using information and multimedia that is necessary and displaying it in a way that is readable.

Defense of the Final Product

Colors

The colors chosen were intentional because I decided that my "uncle" was colorblind. I also didn't want anything too flashy as he wants impress potential clients with his work and not by having an audio soundtrack play or other interactive features.

Other

The font was chosen after careful review of Google Fonts. I wanted the Headings to be a little fancy, but still no-nonsense. The text itself is simple and brings to mind tradition fonts such as Times New Roman and Verdana.

Opportunities for Improvement and Growth

There are many things I would have liked to do with the website.

  • The site isn't fully responsive. I would have liked to create a site that could be used on mobile devices and other screen sizes. I have dual wide screen monitors so the site looks wonderful on my display.
  • Accessibiity: Part of my job at the library is to conduct and accessibility review of the website. One thing I have learned is to start accessible so you don't have to go back and review. However, I am ashamed to admit that I wasn't able to make this site fully accessible.
  • Navigation: I believe the top navigation would be better with dropdown menus.
  • Sub-page layout: The sub-page layout isn't quite what I imagined. I believe what I envisioned would need more complex CSS and maybe even JavaScript. I want the sub-navigation to be vertical and located on the left-hand side. I then wanted the main content area basically be tabs - if a user clicked on "Additions" in the Services area, the URL for the page would be the same, and only the middle frame would change.
  • Background: I wasn't able to get the layout of the main pages exactly what I envisioned either. I wanted a blurred background with transparant boxes so the text would show up clearly. I tried using resources from the W3 school, but it would not work for me.
  • Form: If the form was real, I would have it email the inquiry to my uncle and include a message after the submit button was chosen that said "We have received your message and we will respond shortly. We look forward to helping you!" or something similar.
