What color did you want to wear, Chloe? Regan asked two weeks later at the same place she bought her perfect dress.

Well Chloe stood on one leg and twirled her short brown around her index finger. I was thinking something dark, but not black.

Bailey walked into the conversation and wrinkled her nose. Dont wear black. It would totally wash you out.

Something dark, ay? Regan asked her, seeing her paw through the selection.

Well, I guess so. Not something bright like yours, I dont want that much attention, Chloe emphasized.

Regan laughed. It was just like Chloe never to want too much of the spotlight.

Well, then we can get you something subtle and dark, Bailey said, walking over. Hmm, she thought, staring at what they had to choose from. What color do you want? she asked again.

Chloe shrugged. I dont know, she replied.

Bailey rolled her eyes and put one hand on her hip. Come on now, Chloe. Make up your mind, she said firmly.

Okay, I was thinking Chloe said, looking around at everything. Green.

Okay, Bailey said, turning to the rack and then popping her head back over to Chloe. Was that so hard?

Chloe shrugged and watched while Bailey searched. Hmm you want something dark a dark green what style do you want?

Not what Regan has, she answered.

Regan laughed. No, please dont choose what I have, she said, smiling just thinking about going with Chase. I dont really think I could handle that much color in one night.

They all laughed when Maria came storming from the fitting rooms. And Ill be LUCKY if one of those doors DOES shut! she screamed over her shoulder.

They all turned to look at Maria, who was fuming. Two black dresses were slung over her arm, already tried on.

What was that all about? Regan asked, turning away from the dress rack.

Well, Im waiting to get into this dressing room so I can try on these dresses, right? The bitch with the key told me itd be another five-minute wait before I could get into one. Calmly, I told her I didnt have a lot of time and she SNAPS (get this, she actually
snapped at me), and says, Well, Im sorry, but theres nothing I can do. Youll just have to wait. I looked at her and said, You know, you could use a little tact when talking to your customers. She just rolled her eyes at me and walked away. Then one of the doors came open and the girl in there told me I could use it. I go to walk in and the same bitch with the key says, Im sorry, but you cant use this one. I said, Well, is the reason I cant use it because I told you how to behave around customers the proper way? Or because you have some bug up your ass that I cant see? She slammed the door shut, broke it, and then told me I could use it, Maria explained in full detail.

Did you try them on? Regan ventured, not sure what else to ask.

Of course I did, but not in THAT room. I was lucky enough to get into another one just as the bitch was walking away. When I was done, she came back and saw that I was coming out of another one so she told me I had to leave the store. I looked at her and said, As long as Im paying for these dresses and youre only getting paid six bucks an hour to work here, I can stay for as long as I want. Now I am so mad she said, making a clenching motion with her hands.

Well, we dont have to st started Bailey.

Suddenly, Chloe gasped. She yanked a dress out of the rack so hard Regan was surprised the whole frame didnt burst out of the wall. She was holding a long, green dress.

This is the one, she said. Everyone knew she meant it. Before long, she had one in her size and was in the fitting room trying it on.

I wonder if Quince will like it, Chloe said, sighing.

Chloe was going with a fellow band member of hers, Quincy McGill. He was a senior and the two had been friends for over a year. Over the past couple of weeks he had been acting kind of different. She finally found out why when she was tuning her clarinet, and he wandered away from the drum line to ask her to prom. He was very nervous about it. Before he could even get the word prom out of his mouth, she answered yes. None of Chloes friends knew Quince very well, but they were willing to get to know him for Chloe.

They walked into another store soon after walking out of the last one. It was now Marias turn to hunt down a dress. She was intent on making a killing at prom and shocking her date.

Matthew Taylor was also a junior. Maria and Matthew had been friends since seventh grade. He and Regan were involved for three months their freshman year. Maria had been right there through it all. They mutually decided to go to prom together.

Does Matt want to ride in the limo with us? Regan asked.

Duh, Maria said simply. Hes all over the idea! He was so excited when I told him about it.

Awe, Bailey said, smiling at her.

Finally, after searching for another fifteen minutes, Maria found something she really liked that in her haste she had missed before.

They sat down to eat at a fast food place in the food court. Once they were all finished, said their goodbyes and parted ways.

Bailey Ill call you later, Chloe said, retreating to her blue Taurus.

Okay, she said, turning to Regan. Are you going to be home tonight? I figured that after I get off the phone with Chloe Id call ya and tell you what she had to say about Quince.

Actually, I wont be home. Chase is going to take me out tonight and I dont know what time Ill be back.

Oh, okay, Bailey said, agreeing. She smiled at her before going to her white Malibu. You need to decide what to do with that boy before you take him to prom. I want to know if there will be frolicking or fucking.

Once Regan reached the door of her red Cavalier, she stopped and laughed for a minute. She couldnt believe that Bailey had actually said that to her. Then again, Regan surprised herself when she hadnt jumped in to defend Chases and her relationship. It made her think more about what she felt for him.
