England & Scotland (1998)
This trip was organised in conjunction with my
graduation on July 02, 1998. We rented a Rover 214 and basically circled the
entire British mainland. The route taken was in the order of Birmingham -
Bath - Coventry - Lake District - Glasgow - Fort William - Inverness -
Stirling - Edinburgh - York - London - Birmingham. In the process, the
mileage that we covered was well in excess of 3,000 km.

This is the Birmingham theatre if I'm not mistaken. One of the prominent monuments in the city. Birmingham's very own network of canals. I doubt it serves any purpose these days. Boat rides are available. The place the enjoy the All-England Badminton Championships in real life! I used to park my bicycle here and buy my provisions from the wet market nearby. The start of our "incredible" journey! Classic architecture (may have some Roman influence) Notice the series of houses lining the hill. Flows through a bridge in the distance. At the gates of Warwick Castle. Arrival in Kendal, Lake District (Northwest England) Hunting for B&Bs before proceeding with sight-seeing trip. At the residence of the late English poet, William Wordsworth. A very tranquil place to be. The mini version of Stonehenge! Close-up on the ancient rocks! Rolling hills and farmland! On board the Silverholme launch! Circling the largest lake in the district. Another view from the lake! Cross the border of northern England into Scotland. Places of worship are tourist attractions almost anywhere in the world. In the UK, cathedrals are commonplace. A few large monuments in the distance. We drove up to Fort William and then across to Inverness. In the process, we had to travel past the entire length of Loch Ness. We made our way to a remote part of Loch Ness hoping to catch a glimpse of the "monster". A very clean and orderly city. A B&B run by a widow. The house was very well-decorated. Enjoyed a nice Scottish breakfast. In order to get to the house, we had to drive down a steep road layered with stone pebbles. Our poor Rover really took a battering getting in and out of the place. A bag-piper wearing traditional Scottish costumes. They wear kilts... not skirts! A monument in Stirling by a castle. Scene from the castle. That protrusion on the right hill is actually a statue of William Wallace (of the Braveheart fame). The largest city in Scotland. Edinburgh castle is in the background. Edinburgh is made up of 2 sections of cities; old and new. This picture shows the old section. Across the river is the newer counterpart. The longest road in the older part of the city. It stretches a good few kms. Cross the border and down into Northeast England. One of the spires in York Castle was under restoration at that time. Another impressive cathdral. I took a picture from that exact spot in mid-winter a few years back from then. The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben (the nickname for the clock). Situated along the River Thames. There are no skyscrapers in England except for a few of these "sticks". The place to be if you're interested in arts and entertainment. The main street in London. Adjoins Oxford Street and almost as busy! Visit the home of the Royal family. The most luxurious shopping complex in the UK. Even the English royalty shop here. We were given free accommodation at this 5 star hotel because we missed the flight home due to delays on the Birmingham-Amsterdam leg.
This is the Birmingham theatre if I'm not mistaken.
