June 1st to the 5th: We left Cheyenne, traveled through Laramie on Interstate 80 gradualy climbing towards the Rockies. I-80 is also known as the Lincoln Highway. At the highest point on I-80 there is a rest area with a bust of President Lincoln. The views from the rest area is quite different from the flat grasslands and farms we had been traveling since Texas.
We stopped in Rawlins, WY and rested a few days. Touring the town. The old state penitentary, the local museum and this old Victorian house once belonging to a well to do mining pioneer, George Ferris. His widow lived in it until the 1960's and then it was made into apartments. The current owners bought it 25 years ago and have restored it to original condition. The owner, a very old man, saw us taking pictures and came out to the gate and chatted for half an hour but did not invite us in. (I would have loved to see the inside). Much of the outdoor woodwork had to be reproduced, painted and mounted. But, he did say the slate roof has lasted half of it's 200 year expected lifespan and have had only minor repairs. A fine example of Queen Anne style and a fantastic job of reconstruction. Unfortunately the old gentleman would not allow pictures of himself.
The towns local museum wasmuch like all the other museums we have visited but they would not allow pictures. We obeyed ... so we have nothing to show. No loss anyway.
We Left Rawlins on June 5th and started our northward trek, on US-287 to Jackson Hole, the Teton's and Yellowstone. We stopped for the night in the town of Landers, Wyoming. A small town but pretty and neat, unlike many of the small western towns we have been in. We parked in the town park, NO FEE and no utiilities. There were three other RV's stopped there and across the street in the trees and grass was a bus load of youngsters all camping in tents. There were some teens or young adults partying down the street but did not disturb us. All in all it was a neat little town, but so remote you wonder why anyone would live so far out. It is 125 miles from I-80 at Rawlins and the land is, by our standards, quite barren. Even I slept late the next morning and when I peeked out the window the kids tents were down and they were boarding the school bus to leave. We continued our northward trip. Catching a glimps of the very distant Teton mountains nearly 100 miles away.
