Johanne & Ed's
NOTES FROM THE ROAD
May 18 - 21, 2006
We found a quiet, remote campground on a lake in southern Oklahoma. It was very quiet only three other RV's were there and one was not even occupied.
But, the reason we were there was to see the air-show at Altus Air Force Base on the 20th.
We did drive the 35 miles to the air base and only stayed for the Air Force Thunderbirds.
The temperature was 105 degrees. There would have been a lot more to see but, we just could not stay out in the heat any longer.

After leaving Lake Frederick we continued our northward trek, arriving at Fort Supply Lake and campground in northwest Oklahoma.
The gatekeeper advised us that we could stay the night but that they were fully booked for the upcoming holiday weekend. We agreed and had a nearly empty campground for the night.
Again, we were right on the water.

Leaving Oklahoma and entering Kansas following route US183, into Dodge City. Such an historical town conjurs up visions of horses, saloons, guns and such.  But, it is just another tired, old city with too many cars, too many run down buildings and too many tourist trappings.
In fairness, we did not spend much time there but camped just outside of town.
The above clouds appeared that evening right after we had a wicked thunderstorm and hail from dime to quarter size.  The wind gusts blew down my satellite dish.  (it's OK though)

Much of our travels thru OK, KS & NE have been on these endless ribbons of country highway with hay, wheat and corn fields, some plowed and planted, but many were not.
Onward, northwest from Dodge City on US50 and at Garden City picked up US83 north on into Nebraska. to McCook and out of town 11 miles to  another state park on a Lake.
Red Willow Recreation area, a very nice park until we found out there was no water as well as no sewer hookups. But, since we are self contained we managed anyway. We have since learned that no state parks and rec areas in this part of the country have water and sewer and few even have electric at the campsites.  Oh well....we are spoiled.
Following US83 northward we entered Nebraska and then into North Platte, NE.  We then hopped onto Interstate 80 westbound about 35 miles to the town of Ogalalla. On our second try we found a campground that had 3 open spots for the weekend. Remember, this is the start of summer and anyone with a camper is using them. So we want to be off the road and settled too.
Now, we are at Eagle Canyon Hideaway.  A small neat campground full of young familys here for the holiday weekend. This park is again near a lake.  Many boats, ATV's and fishing rods.
Kids chasing frogs, riding bikes and screeching as only children can.
The weather has been unusally warm and windy. The past two nights I have taken the satellite dish apart in advance of high winds and threats of tornado activity.  Other than the wind we have been spared the rain and worse.
Destination: Yellowstone National Park
May 25 - 30, 2006
Our plans after leaving here will be to continue west on I-80 into Wyoming, thru Cheyenne, Laramie and at Rock Springs turn north to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.
There is a lot more to say but I will close this and see what the response is to this effort.
Have a safe & happy
