.:featured story- "Aunt Bertha":.
While participating in a youth event at New Bethel, it was reported that the cremains of a miss "Aunt Bertha" had been sent UPS to the church. This being an unlikely story, I didn't take it seriously when the late "AuntBertha" was said to be temporarily residing in Rev. John Rhode's office. As we (the youth) were playing hide and seek in the church, Rev. Rhode's son, John Christopher Rhodes, decided it would be nice for "Aunt Bertha" to have one last night of excitement before she was to be laid to rest in the church cemetery. I, still assuming this was all a practical joke, wasn't to surprised when Chris began running through the halls trying to frighten people with the box containing the remains of "Aunt Bertha". Later, as we returned "Aunt Bertha" to her temporary resting place in Rev. Rhodes' office, I gave the box a pat and said, "Poor old Aunt Bertha, it's been an exciting night for her." A few of the others were rather appalled that I should pat the box containing "Aunt Bertha" in such a disrespectful manner. Chris, however, handed the box to me and told me to feel how heavy "Aunt Bertha" was. I took "Aunt Bertha" from Chris, and gave the box a light bounce to judge the weight, once again causing some of the youth to reprimand me for being disrespectful to the dead. Still believing the whole thing to be some sort of a prank cooked up by Chris and Mrs. Rhodes (who was the one to bring "Aunt Bertha" to the youth's attention in the first place), I merely laughed it off. Then the next morning, I found Rev. Rhodes digging a small hole in the cemetery. |
