February 20, 2001 I learned today that my paternal grandmother has died and left me in her will. She died of a heart attack January 4, 2001. Her funeral was January 9th. I wish I could have attended; since I couldn't say goodbye in person, I wanted to do something here. Dorothy Focht, I wish things had been different between and around us. I hope you found a peaceful end and that your next life holds joy and growth.
Melvin "Bud" Gessin (my grandfather), Dorothy Focht (my grandmother), Michael Lewars (my father), 1999 (I think).. Dorothy described Melvin to me as the only man she'd ever really loved. Melvin came to her 50 years after they'd separated and said, "I want you back;" I encouraged her to see how it would be to restart a relationship with him. I'm very glad that she did, and that they were able to have more time together.
Addendum: I've learned that Dorothy died in Florida, so I'm assuming she died while with Bud at his winter home. And I'm glad they were together - though I'm sorry for his loss.
