| February 6, 2002, Wednesday Mark Chapter 12 Jesus states the first commandment of all in Mk 12:29-31, "And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:/ And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment./ And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neigbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these." First our God is a jealous God (Ex 20:5). 2 Co 11:2 states, "For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused to you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ." Our Lord therefore requires our full attention and commitment, not only intellectually, but our soul and heart. Our ways must be driven to change out of wonder and awe of the Creator in accordance with His will. And the second is truly like unto the first. Love for God will inevitably bring about a love for the neighbour since God is Love. 1 Co 13 is a wonderfully descriptive chapter on love. Indeed, even the blind singer and writer Ginny Owens was divinely inspired by this love to write "I Am Nothing," a song first introduced to me by Sung two weeks ago and which brilliantly illustrates godly charity. *end of excerpt* |
