Logfile from Elehu
MOO Time: 2001-06-01 08:48:04

Theorn enters quietly, not wanting to disturb anything that was going on before he arrived. A slight shuffle of his feet, and a bright smile at the others, and he stands, waiting for Elehu to say something.

Katrine walks into the infirmary, her keen eyes giving the room a quick once over. "Very impressive." she mutters under her breath. On noticing Theorn, she wanders over in his direction. "You here for the class." she asks softly as not to disturb anyone else in the room.

Theorn nods slightly, just the tiniest tip of his head. "Yes, i take it you are too?" he is quiet too, only speaking just above a whisper. "So Aerrin still treating you well? grinstead still agreeing with you?"

Infirmary (#7841)
Echoing and austere, blank stone walls are vaulted high to overshadow the row of white-curtained cots along the back wall. Ancient metal gleams steel-bright in the form of sinks and examination table, lit relentlessly by bright glows and reflecting the colours of bottles and jars shelved above. Padlocked cabinets hide the more dangerous drugs and implements, whilst healer paraphenalia litters one solid oak table with sweetly-fragranced herbs and tattered scrolls. A small hearth contains a fire usually banked low, several cauldrons set ready nearby to for heating water. A dark staircase twists up from one corner to the dragonhealer's lair; one low door leads into the lower caverns, another to weyrhealers' quarters. Barn-sized doors open inwards with creak of hinges from the ground weyr.
Comfortable on top of a cupboard are Sploink, Filia, Caerulus, Risidan, D'argo, Pudge, Klee, and Hermes.
You see examination area here.
You notice Donavan, Alirah, and Kariel asleep here.
Rarah, Theorn, and Katrine are here.
Obvious exits:
Ground Weyrs - Inner Caverns - Healers' Quarters

Elehu had just finished lining up a few items in a small tray on the counter when the apprentices entered. Now she turns, almost beaming at them. "You're here for the class I take it?" she asks, not really waiting for an answer. "It's the first level of the first aid class today, so if that's not the one you need, you're in the wrong place," she adds with a wink as she takes a seat on one of the stools. "Otherwise, take a seat, chair, stool or cot is fine."

Elehu (#19619)
Elehu has grown into womanhood with quite a bit of success. She has curves in most of the right places, though her body is still a bit on the thin side. Her slender five and a half foot build has a faint gleam of golden bronze, the visage or a traveler. Her rich brown, shoulder-length hair contains streaks of gold, bleached by the sun, that seem to make her hazel-brown eyes shine with an inner fire. Her hands are small, but her fingers are slender and nimble, well built for her walk of life.
A soft purple robe shrouds Elehu, the material almost delicate as it falls from her shoulders in light waves. Below can be seen her white bare feet, and above, the slightly tanned skin of her chest and neck, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders.
A soft cord of the deepest purple winds itself around a similar cord of bright white in a single loop. Small strands of icy blue and shadowy black are intertwined intricately, a long tail of all four colors hanging from the knot, signifying that Elehu is a Healer Journeyman posted at High Reaches Weyr.
She is awake and looks alert.
Elehu is 19 Turns, 5 months, and 23 days old.

Theorn (#21838)
Theorn looks normal at first glance, but then his seemingly average features seem to leap out at you. His hair first off, is not the dull blond it seems, it is infact, golden, and reflects the light like a bronze mirror. His eyes catch your attention next, a deep blue, with hidden depths. But thats not all, his eyes have grey swirls in them, which seem to gently move as you look at them, like ripples on a pond. He is tall, just over six feet, and moves with a gentle, fluid grace. His smile is endearing, and almost mischievous, showing that he is more than he appears.
A simple, homespun tunic offsets his features, showing his inner beauty, as well as his outer charm. He wears plain, hardworn boots, and a battered grey cloak, with the hood down. Theorn wears Theorn's Listening Tube around his neck.
Theorn wears a double corded, single loop knot, its dominant colour purple, and the other white, to indicate his rank as a healer apprentice.
He is awake and looks alert.
Theorn is 15 Turns, 6 months, and 7 days old.

Katrine (#21731)
Standing only 5'6, you can't describe her as a tall young woman. Her short hair, the colour of fresh klah, curls appealingly around her face, with wayward wisps that stick out in all directions. Long, dark lashes frame her eyes which are an unusual shade of violet. The button nose seems perfect for her rounded face, but her generous mouth seems out of place. Her skin has the golden hue of a person used to working outdoors, the sun bleaching blond streaks through her hair. Her figure has blossomed into that of a young woman, leaving behind her skinny adolescent figure.
A loose purple shirt covers her upper body, it's colour similar to redwort flowers. A delicate pattern has been stitched by her own hand around the scooped neckline. Her dark purple wherhide trousers fit snuggly around her legs, held up by a simple black belt. On her feet are black boots which have seen betters days, leaving looking rather worn and shabby. A delicate locket hangs from a thin chain that feels soft to the touch, glittering as it catches the light. The locket is small, yet delicately etched with various flowers and scrolled designs. Inside is a small inscription, etched by a skilled hand in beautiful letters. From Theorn, Friends Forever. Katrine wears Katrine's Listening Tube around her neck.
Purple and white cord twines to form a simple loop, showing the owner to be a Healer Apprentice.
She is awake, but has been staring off into space for 4 minutes.
Katrine is 16 Turns, 9 months, and 23 days old.

Katrine grins back at Theorn, her eyes bright. "Aerrin is great, she showed me how to make hyssop syrup yesterday and Grinstead is a lovely." It's just a shame you're not there, she thinks to herself. Walking to the nearest chair and sits herself down on it, making herself as comfortable as possible.

Mirenda appears from the healers' quarters.

OOC: Elehu says "Bit of OOC stuff first. I'm just going to remind everyone that RP is expected, even required for the class. Not that I don't think you will, but I just like to state it for the record. ;)"

Mirenda (#21723)
Her hair is of a ebon, with a silvery shine tinting into the bright light of the sun. The hair is also long, straight, curling inwards around her mid-back. Big, grey eyes stare blankly out, seeming always in a different thought, never appearing to focus or concentrate. Her over-all appearnce is rather lanky. Her skin is extremely pale, though flawless. Her legs and arms are long and spindly, making her seem more gawky than most. The lankiness of the girl is sometimes blotted by her gracefull stride; toe, heal, toe, heal; extremely coordinated, never seeming to trip, stumble or swagger. This humble girl, is Mirenda.
A long red dress. Not a fancy dress, nor a bright red. It hangs loosely over her body, falling down to her ankles. A thick, white string is tied around her waist. Her shoes are boots, black and leather; old and worn over the ages. She wears gloves, made of leather as well, but with the fingers cut out of them for the ease of holding things better. Mirenda wears Mirenda's Listening Tube around her neck.
She is wearing a double cord of purple and white, in a single loop to show that she is a Healer Apprentice.
She is awake and looks alert.
Mirenda is 17 Turns, 4 months, and 9 days old.

Theorn moves over to get a stool, smiling all the while. A slight headturn to katrine as he sits down. "Aeriella is good too, strict, but she is nice when you get to know her. Although she has me up to my eyeballs in chores." By that time he is seated, and getting his things ready.

Elehu waves Mirenda towards a seat as the young woman enters. "Ah good, another student. Don't worry, we're just getting started." She turns back to the others. "In case you don't know me, I'm Elehu, one of the journeymen here at 'Reaches. Can I get your names, just so everyone knows each other..."

Katrine chuckles at Theorn's remarks as she takes her things out of her bag, he always manages to make her smile. Turning her attention once more to Elehu she answers her question. "Hello I'm Katrine." she says as she quickly looks around to see who else is here, seeing an unfamiliar face.

Mirenda ambles through the passage way of the apprentice dorms, taunted by the promising voices. A squeal of mirth rises out of her maw as she takes the offered seat. "I'm Mirenda." she states, face pantomizing a smile as he points her thumb to her chest. Book, hide, and writing utensil are all taken from a sack that was formerly slung around her shoulds; which has now been pulled along side her seat.

Theorn nods and puts his things down around him, before speaking "My name is Theorn," he answers "well met Elehu." he then looks over at mirenda, recognising her very vaguely. "And well met Mirenda." he finishes, once the other girl has introduced herself.

Banzai blinks in from ::between::!

Elehu smiles again, folding her hands in her lap. "Wonderful, pleased to meet you, Katrine and Theorn, and of course Mirenda," she adds with a wink. "Alright, on with the class then. To start out, who knows why we call it 'First Aid'?"

Simbi tumbles in from ::between::, a flash of blue coming from his active wings.

"Well met, Theorn, Katrine." chirps the girl merrily as she is greeted with another name. The wink to Elehu is mirrored. Her hand flings into the air at the audit of a question. Oh! She knows this! Let -her- answer!

Katrine tucks her bag out of the way, all ready for the class to begin. She smilies a "Hello" at Mirenda, the unfamiliar face, before turning to face Elehu. She blinks when she hears Elehu's question, not expecting it. Taking a wild stab at it, "Is it because it's the first thing you do?" Knowing that can't be right.

Theorn raises his hand, not knowing if that is neccassary, but not wanting to get extra chores later for failing to do so. Seeing mirenda with her hand up makes his lower it slightly, and katrine giving the answer he thinking brings it down.

Elehu grins at Mirenda. "You can just call out the answer if you know it," she informs the small class. She nods slowly to Katrine and smiles softly. "Basically... First Aid can be considered to be an emergency procedure, no matter how minor or how drastic because it's the first step you take to insure that any injury has been taken care of. First Aid is often split into two main divisions, does anyone know what those might be?"

Kinecha pushes her way in from the ground weyrs.

Kinecha (#20839)
Reaching a height of almost 6 feet, this woman is taller than most. Her features are somewhat like those of a man, with hardened arm and leg muscels. Her short hair, whiteblonde, has been cut with a knife making the ends ragged and uneven. Long brows curve over wide grayish green eyes with dark lashes. Her cheekbones and chin are angular and her nose is long and narrow with only a little bend at the middle, where it once was broken. On her right cheek is a 2 inch scar which runs just below her cheekbone, and around her body are several other scars, the largest running along her lower abdomin at a length of 5 inches. Her face is slighty tanned, a light bronzing of the skin, a result of many hours in the sun, stands in constrast to her hair. Her hands, with strong, long fingers, are callused and scarred. All in all, this woman is very masculine.
Never wearing skirts or dresses Kinecha's off-duty consists of a darkgreen, somewhat worn tunic is worn over a sleeveless beige shirt. Naturalcolored canvastrousers fall over her dark boots to the ankle where they've been rolled up, due to the fact that they are too long for her legs. On her left side a belt knife rests in its sheath, attached to a broad belt. Shango perches majestically on Kinecha's shoulder as if it were a throne. Necha's Pack hangs heavily from Kinecha's shoulder.
A double corded knot in the black and blue of High Reaches, has been looped once and left with a tail. Hanging from her right shoulder, it designates her a Guard of the Weyr.
She is awake and looks alert.
Kinecha is 21 Turns, 10 months, and 11 days old.

Ugh...not her, bt she does manage to scribble down a few random words of the beginings of the Journeyman's lecture. Grey optics flicker slightly, and swirv back to Elehu, apprhensive of an answer. [Mirenda ]

Theorn looks confused. A complete stab in the dark is taken. " Major first aid, and minor first aid?" an eyebrow is raised questioningly, his mind not working properly yet. He waits to see what other people say, knowing his cant be right.

Katrine realises too late that she should have raised her hand instead of blurting out the answer, used to less formal classes with Aerrin. Sighing with relief when she hears Elehu's words, glad to have escaped extra chores. As she has no idea of the answer to the next question she shakes her head from side to side.

Kinecha blinks in surprise at the crowd here, and stands to one side, not wanting to interrupt, picking up the word first aid. Scratching her cheek, she attempts not to touch the sunburnt parts of her face.

Elehu smiles brightly as Kinecha enters, waving at the guard. "Hello there, Kinecha. We're just having a little first aid class today." She glances back at the Healer apprentices, tilting her head slightly. "Hmm... in a way, Theorn. We like to split them into 'life-threatening' and of course 'non life-threatening'. Today we'll be discussing the latter of the two. Now, who can tell me what sorts of injuries might be considered non life-threatening?" She glances once more at Kinecha and smiles softly, whispering, "Do you need anything, Necha? Anything for that burn? Otherwise... you can stick around," she adds, grinning.

Katrine mentally chides herself, she should know basic things like that and quickly scrawls it down. Hearing another person enter the room she glances round to see who it is. She knows the answer to this one though, "Sunburn." throwing a sympathetic glance to the person named as Kinecha.

"That's okay, Ele," Kinecha says, holding up a hand to the healer. "It can wait.. 'sides I could do with refreshing the first aid." Giving the others a crooked smile, she leans against the wall, trying to remember what she'd learnt in her first first aid lesson.

"A cut?" Mirenda guesses, a single, ebon eyebrow raising in curiousity. Grey orbs falls on Kinecha, and a hand is jut into the air to give a jovial wave. Eyes sweep back over to the current teacher.

Theorn smiles widely, surprised he was so close to the right answer, and the emotion showing clearly on his face. "Would cuts count?" he asks, as he waves a slight greeting to Kinecha. "Maybe bruising?" he is stabbing in the dark again, having no clue whatsoever on the subject

Elehu grins at her students, Kinecha included. "A very good start indeed. Of course, all of those would be non life-threatening assuming that they are properly treated. Otherwise, there are far too many infections that can definitely become life-threatening. Scratches, cuts, abrasions, bruises and burns can all be non life-threatening. There are a few other injuries that are often borderline, but again, when properly treated the patient should come through just fine. A concussion could be one such injury. There's one other type of injury that, if we /can/ treat it, would hopefully be non threatening. Can anyone think of what it might be?"

Katrine looks up again after finishing writing down her notes. Her hand moving to her neck to gently massaging a sore spot, sighing with relief as the pain leaves. A frown mares her forehead as she tries in vain to work out what Elehu means.

Elehu just grins as she waits to see if anyone answers. "An injury we treat a bit more often in the Weyr than in the Halls and Holds," she offers as a hint.

Theorn thinks for a moment or two before answering, intence concentration visible on his face. "Threadscore? ummm.... maybe...An animal bite?" he is running out of ideas fast, and is obviously grasping at anything, his tongue slightly out of one corner of his mouth as he thinks. "A...a" he breaks off

Kinecha crosses her arms in front of her chest, grinning slightly as she looks at the apprentices, then at Elehu, "broken bones?" she blurts out, gives a shrug of her shoulders.

More notes are scribbled quickly onto the hide. Mirenda' eyebrow doesn'r retire to it's normal position; yet it raises more. Her memory is rummaged through cautiousy. She doesn't know the answer.

Katrine's frown deepens, does she means a threadscore? You would have more of them in a weyr. "Threadscore." she says, echoing Theorn suggestion.

Elehu claps her hands suddenly, obviously already chipper this morning, and more so with the answers. "Excellent! Animal bites would really go under cuts or abrasions more often than not, though it's often more important to keep the area disinfected. Bone breaks are almost always non life-threatening though they're very delicate to work with. I was hinting at threadscore though," she adds, winking. "So my next question is, why would threadscore be considered non life-threatening when we're treating it?"

Theorn waits until the answer is confirmed, as he quickly notes down what has been discussed already. "Because it doesnt usually kill people? it just leaves a nasty scar? and we know how to treat it so it doesnt get any more damage?"

Katrine decides this is a /hard/ class. Thinking so hard about the question that she causes wrinkles to form on her brow. Looks around the class hoping to see inspiration on someones face. "is it because the thread is already dead at that stage?" not sure if she is right.

Elehu arches a brow at Theorn and quickly shakes her head. "Not at all, if Thread touches you and you're not able to go between or douse it in water, you'll be dead in half a minute if not sooner. In fact, if you're standing on anything other than stone, the Thread will literally eat right through your body and keep on going to the grass, the trees, whatever else is around that basically isn't metal, rock or water." She waits to see if either of the other two "students" has an answer.

Kinecha keeps quiet, leaning against the wall, trying not to scratch her sunburnt face, as she watches the poor bewildered appies trying to grasp threadscore. Not that she herself knew a lot about the healing part of it, but she'd seen plenty of threadscores in her time.

Mirenda makes an odd noise in the back of her throat. No no no...she doesn't want that sort of thing happening to her! No dragons for her! More notes are scribbled down.

Theorn shudders at the thought, glad he stays inside during threadfall, and gaining a little more respect for the riders who go out in it. He writes down what has been said, still feeling quesy from the thought. "Becasue if they survive long enough to get to a healer the thread isnt going to eat them more? Like Katrine said, it would be dead?"

Katrine blanches at Elehu's description of thread, she is /not/ looking foward to treating the wounds of a person who has encountered it. Giving herself a little shake to rid her mind of vivid pictures.

Elehu smiles softly and waits until she knows she has the others' attention. "The reason is, if the person somehow manages to go between or kill the thread with water... or fire actually, though that causes other problems... that means they'll live long enough to see a Healer. So by the time we actually see a Threadscored patient, the danger and damage of Thread is already done." She shifts slightly, swallowing as even she as a Healer can't quite deal with Thread and not get queasy. "So, on that uplifting note, does anyone know what you would do for a Threadscored patient?"

Katrine thinks she knows this one. "Treat them with numbweed to deaden the area?" Unable to imagine the pain a threadscore person must feel.

Mirenda nods. "Use numbweed! I heard them talk about using it before." answers the girl, eyes wide with anticipation of a reply.

Still pale from the thought of thread, Theorn answers "Use numbweed on it? Maybe dragons tongue or something like that?"

Kinecha isn't sure they'd covered this subject when she'd gotten a first aid lesson for guards, but she nods in agreement with the apprentices, "numbweed," she repeats, sure that she'd seen it used on scored riders and dragons in the Weyr.

With yet another beaming smile, the Elehu nods to her class. "Indeed, numbweed is almost always the very first way you'd treat a score. In just about every aspect, scores can be treated much the same way as a cut or scratch. So, why don't we move on to that. What would you do for a scratch, first one that doesn't draw blood, then for one that does."

Theorn puzzles over it for a moment. "A scratch that doesnt draw blood would just need to be cleaned right? thats not really dangerous at all, and almost the same for a scratch that is bleeding, except if its deep, and you should try to stop it bleeding?"

Katrine thinks this one over for a minute, "For a scratch that bleeds do you apply pressure until it stops? and for one that does not do you just clean the area?" thinking she has heard this before but is not too sure. (Is she ever?)

Kinecha winces, knowing perfectly well what to do for deep scratched, cuts to be more accurate and gives Ele a slight grins, absentmindedly rubbing the scar on her midsection, hidden away by her tunic.

Mirenda hmms softly, shaking her head. "Neither sound very dangerous." she states softly, not getting her own answer in -- it's already been answered, right? Why does she need to, too?

Elehu grins a little, nodding idly. "Especially with a scratch, the first step is always to wash it in warm soapy water. Applying redwort is often a good idea as it disinfects the area. Even a minor scratch tears away skin which could expose the layers underneath to infections. If the scratch is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth, then once it stops you can either bandage it if you think it might bleed again, or leave it open to the air which helps it heal faster. You /can/ use numbweed if the scratch is bad enough, though there are herbs that can be used to help with the pain as well. That will be covered later on." She pauses, waiting for the note-takers to catch up. "Does anyone know by the way what sorts of areas we /can't/ use numbweed and redwort on?"

Theorn looks up from his notetaking. "On parts of the face? do you have to keep it away from the eyes and mouth and stuff?" he is unsure, but willing to guess at it till he is right.

Mirenda glances up. "The eyes, and ears, and mouth, and nose? It might alter the senses?" she guesses, the same pntomime of bewilderment and apprehension showing on her face.

Katrine glances over a Theorn, throwing him a quick wink. "I'd say the same thing as Theorn, as well as any openings." she thinks, maybe.

More or less out of her expertise this question, so Kinecha lets the apprentices do the talking, pushing off the wall to stand with her legs apart, clasping her hands behind her back, to keep them away from her face.

Elehu nods quickly. "Basically any area that produces it's own fluids or mucus," she informs them. "Which would include the ears, though that isn't quite as dangerous. Only if the redwort or numbweed is actually allowed to slide /into/ the ear. So, the eyes, nose and throat for sure, and also, especially for women, the genital areas." She's definitely a Healer to be able to discuss this without batting an eye. Instead she just smiles pleasantly as she continues with the class. "So if these areas are in pain, you'll want to first, be very careful, and second, consider herbal alternatives which is discussed in the herbalry classes. Now, the same methods for scratches, also called abrasions, work for cuts. Just always remember to keep the area clean, and replace the bandages regularly until they're no longer needed."

Theorn smiles at katrine's wink, returning one of his own. Suddenly seeming to remember Kinecha, he watches her for a moment, wondering how she got such bad sunburn. his eyes dart back to Elehu as she talks, and he quickly notes down what she says. "Just out of curiosity, what would happen if you were to eat numbweed?" He hadnt asked it in the herbalry lesson, but did wonder about it.

Mirenda manages to stifle a laugh. She was going to suggest the genital areas -- but she didn't find it appropriate. She jots more notes down, nodding. She, ofcourse, hasn't taken herbology yet, so she just does with what she knows at the moment.

Katrine grins at Theorn's question, why would anyone want to eat numbweed, it smells bad enough, imagine what it must taste like. Hurriedly jotting down her notes, when did my notebook become filled with doodles, she wonders.

Elehu suddenly starts laughing as Theorn asks his question. "Why someone would do that is beyond me," she replies, still giggling. "The plant can smell pretty bad even before we harvest it and turn it into a salve. "However, I believe the plant itself is rather harmless before it's been boiled and turned into our actual numbweed salve. If enough is eaten though we would have to use a concoction to induce vomitting. I'll have to ask a Herbal specialist though to make sure it's not more dangerous than that. Any other questions so far?"

Kinecha hmms. Lots more learned in this lesson, than the other one she'd taken. Standing perfectly still, as she'd learned in guardtraining, she does her best to ignore the burning patches of her face. It's not like a sunburn needed urgent treatment, and she didn't want to interrupt the class. Especially when she was learning something new.

Theorn smiles as he notes that fact down, making a mental note to ask Aeriella when he returns to minehold. "Again, just out of curiosity, and i dont know if this will be covered in another class, what do you do if a wound does become infected?"

Katrine shakes her head, it's been quite straight forward so far. Her ears picking up Thoern's question, she'd never thought of that.

Mirenda shrugs off the questions, just waiting for answers and more notes. This is taking longer than she thoughr.

Elehu glances at each of the people in the class and smiles, about to continue. As Theorn pipes up she just grins instead. "Ah, good question. Hopefully you'd catch the infection soon enough to be able to heal it using redwort. There are again some herbs that can help, and again, you'll learn about those later on. Now, if there are no other questions we'll move on to bruises. Anyone know how you can treat a bruise?"

Theorn perks up at this question. "If you use raw meat on your eye it can stop it bruising." he says, thinking at the same time that there is a herb for that too....

"My mom used to say to massge it for a while. Always worked for me." Mirenda guesses, shrugging. She's no expert, obviously.

Katrine pulls a face at the thought of putting raw meat on your face. Shrugging her shuolders to indicate she does not know.

Theorn thinks for a moment longer. "Arsnica. Thats what i was thinking of Arsnica. Its a herb that you use for bruises, Right?"

Katrine ahs, that rings a bell, "it's a mountain plant isn't it?"

Bruises was something guards managed to get just about everyday, but Kinecha didn't much worry about using first aid for them, as they mostly seemed to go away on their own after a while, so she just shrugs, knowing that this was a subject that had been covered before in the other lesson, though she couldn't remember anything specific about it.

Sudanna ducks in from the inner caverns.

Theorn smiles at Katrine, her backing him up making him more confident of his answer. "Yeah, its nice mountian flower I think. Arsnica, thats right isnt it?" he finishes, smiling to himself

Sudanna peeks in and grins... "I heard you were having a healer convention without me! so I got S'keagan to bring me up here. How is everyone?"

"Hmm... all interesting answers," Elehu replies thoughtfully, "However, we, as Healers, wouldn't want to use meat. It's often not easy to keep it cold so it could have hundreds of germs on it, and you /don't/ want that in your eye. As for massaging, if it's truly a bruise, pressing on it would often make it worse. The sort of injury requiring massage would more likely be a muscle strain or something similar. What we would use in the infirmary here is a compress of comfrey and often numbweed to dull the pain. A cold compress would help swelling go down, but warm compresses seem to be more soothing more often than not. If you need to, you can give the patient a small dose of willowbark, but use it sparingly. If the patient has been in a bad enough fall we might need to resort to fellis, but you, as apprentices, would never, ever, give a patient fellis, undersood? Even journeymen like me don't give it out, only Masters."

Theorn looks up at Sudanna, and waves, smiling even wider. "How are you Sudanna?" he asks, still smiling over his answer. "It has been a long time since i have seen you."

Katrine waves a greeting at Sudanna. "Hello Sudanna, how are you doing." she calls. Before resuming writing down the notes as quick as she can, rubbing her aching wrist.

Mirenda waves a hand at Sudanna, then returns to look at Elehu, eyes wide. She contually writes note, barely even looking at the hide itself.

Sudanna nods to the apprentices adn slides quietly into a chair towards the bck of the infirmary. patiently waiting and listening. Never a bad idea to catch a refresher of things seldom used.

Kinecha gives Sudanna a nod from her position near the wall, then turns back to Ele her head tilted. She hadn't know that only masters could give out fellis. See, learning something new all the time, so there was no reason to interrupt to get something soothing for her sunburn.

Elehu pauses for a moment to make sure everyone has caught up, seeing as the silly journeyman talks a bit too much. She smiles as she finally notices Sudanna joining the class. "Good to see you, senior journeyman," she greets, grinning a bit. "Does everyone here know Sudanna from Tillek Hold?" She also nods to Theorn and chuckles softly. "My, you've been studying, haven't you Theorn," she comments. "However, that again would be a little more advanced that simple First Aid, which is what I'm covering here." She winks at him. "Keep up those studies though. It's just that First Aid should mainly incorporate items any infirmary, large or small, should have on hand. In fact, journeymen and higher are often required to take their own supplies with them. Now, before I move on, any other questions?"

Bow-Wow pushes his way in from the ground weyrs.

Mirenda nods to Elehu, continueing with her scribbly notes. She repeats a few in a murmur as she writes.

Theorn smiles at the compliment from Elehu, mumbling something about an interest in herbalry, and blushing a light shade the redness just brushing his cheeks

Elehu swings her legs slowly, blinking as she tries to recall where she was in the class. "Oh! Bone breaks." She blinks yet again, and shakes her head. "Alright, what are the two main categories of bone breaks?" she asks the class.

Sudanna perks up.. bonehealing just happens to be one of her main focuses...

Mirenda looks back up, hmming softly. "Major and minor? Minor being just a little fracture, and major being when the bone breaks enough to cut through the skin?" A bold guess, she telsl herself, eyes flickering.

Still blushing, Theorn has a go at answering. "Breaks and fractures?" he attemps, looking round to judge reactions to his answer, as if peoples faces could tell him if he has the right answer

Kinecha didn't know any categories of bone breaks, but she /had/ learned how to perform first aid on them, which was splinting them. But that wasn't the question, right? And she was really only observing here.

Katrine pulls another face, remember when her sister broke her leg and the bone was sticking out. "Mirenda's right."

"Internal and External." Elehu really isn't bouncing in her seat... maybe. "Any break is a fracture. And internal and external are rather easy to tell apart. If it's external, you can see the bone." So suave. "Now, since we're simply covering the First Aid aspect of breaks," she continues, grinning slightly at Sudanna, "I'm just going to give you the basics. You'd normally find a break by gently but thoroughly feeling the area, or if you need to, but moving a limb if it's an arm or leg. Be /very/ careful when moving a person however. If a bit of bone, called marrow, gets into the blood stream it will kill the patient when it gets to the heart." She waits for the students to catch up.

Katrine looks up at the last bit, not realizing until then how much danger her sister could have been in. Turning her head slightly she looks at Theorn, wishing she could remember as much as he can.

Mirenda nods. Well, she was close, wasn't she? More notes are writen. Her wrist is begining to hurt..

Theorn raises both eyebrow, surprised at what marrow can do to a person. He notes down what she says, having never broken a bone himself, so not knowing anythign abot it.

Elehu tilts back just a bit on the stool and grins at Sudanna. "And just so that no one gets confused, an internal bone fracture is also called a 'simple' fracture, and an external one can be called a 'compound' fracture. Now, does anyone know how you'd go about healing such an injury?"

Mirenda takes another guess, "A splint?" Quite a simple answer, eh? She doesn't have to expalin it, too, does she?

Theorn doesnt even look up, not having any idea as to this answer, and not wanting to even express his idea of 'stick them back together' so instead he keeps writting, trying to make himself look busy.

Katrine has a little firsthand experience at external fractures, "you have to /gently/ push the bone back into place, then put a splint on it." she can't remember anything else.

Sudanna sits backa nd listens.. Good group of intelligent creative apprentices. Now let's hope they learn as wella s think...

Elehu just grins a little. "Very close, close indeed," she replies. "In fact though, it's often more of a pull to get a bone back in place than a push." You'd think she's discussing recipes with that sunny face. "Once the bone is in place though, you should be able to tell by again gently running your hands or fingers along the area. Of course, the patient will be in a lot of pain, but we really can't do much in an emergency other than using numbweed, redwort if the break is external." She pauses for a few moments. "Now, with breaks there is often swelling. I usually just try to use cold compresses when possible, but again, there are herbal compresses available usually which is also covered in the herbalry class. And of course, next comes the splint. What sorts of things, in an emergency, would you use for a splint?"

Katrine's eyebrows draw together as she considers this, scanning the room for ideas and finding none. "Would anything straight and quite sturdy do?" it is the only thing she can come up with.

Theorn tries to think of an answer, any answer, but his brain seems to have switched itself off, so he sits, completely silent except for the slight scratching of him writing.

Mirenda just watches, scribbles notes, and stays all-around quiet. There isn't much to say. The other apprentices are answering correctly, in her mind, anyways.

"Sticks, or whatever straight thing nearby," Kinecha blurts out, her hands still clasped behind her back, fingers of one drumming into the other.

Elehu nods quickly to Katrine and Kinecha, all but beaming. "Exactly. There are really quite a few alternatives. Some of the stiffer grasses and river weeds come in handy, wood if it's available, even rolled up blankets of nothing else. After the emergency has passed though you'll want to find something more sturdy, which more often than not is wood. They'll need to keep this splint on until the bone is sufficiently healed. So... any questions on anything we've covered today?"

Mirenda shakes her head. "It all makes sense. No questions fom me." states the girl, still writing scratchy notes.

Theorn shakes his head, not having any more questions to ask. "None here," he says, smiling just a little. "I cant think of anything that isnt quite straight forward."

Katrine shakes her head as well, "nope." At least she thinks she understands it.

Elehu says, "There's really only one more warning I can give, which is actually quite vital in First Aid, emergency situations. Watch the patient carefully, and I don't just mean for bleeding. They can often go into a state of shock which can have several effects that may be harmful to their own healing or even someone else's. If this does happen, or if they panic, try to be as soothing as time allows, but if necessary you just might need to tie them down. And I'm not joking." For such a serene face she can make her voice quite stern. "Also, if the emergency you're in involves more than one person, just remember: Stabilize First, then heal what you can. Sometimes, though I hope it never happens to you, you might even need to decide to skip a victim who is obviously dying and couldn't be saved in order to heal the victim you /can/ save. It's a hard decision to make. But... that's about all for this class. A rather sombre note, I'm afraid."

Katrine blinks as she realizes the class is finished, quickly she writes down the last of the notes. With a sigh of relief she shakes her wrist to try and get some feeling back into it after writintg /so/ much.

Mirenda makes that same noise in the back of her throat. Well, that was nice, eh? Notes are finished and she glances back to the journeyman. "That's bad...I hope I never have to see that happen." she states in a melancholy voice.

Theorn smiles, as usual, despite the sombre note the lesson finished off on. Remembering his manners he turns to Elehu. "Thank you for the lesson Elehu."

Sudanna shudders and rememebr just such a situation.. She had nightmares for sevendays after.

Katrine looks around the class before thanking Elehu, "Thanks for the great lesson." she enthuses, not believing she has learned so much.

Elehu nods slowly and stands, stretching up on her tip-toes. "Excellent class, thank you students," she comments with a warm smile, moving towards a counter where she jots down a few notes of her own.

Kinecha takes a deep breath, deciding that she's glad that she's not a healer having to make such decision, as to who lives or dies. Sure, it was important for a guard to know a little first aid, but she didn't have to make life or death decisions. Unclasping her hands, she graps her left elbow with the right hand, giving Elehu a slight smile.

Sudanna says, "good ideas Apprentices. Nice to see you all thinking."

Mirenda smiles and also thanks Elehu, shrugging. Bad thoughts. Deciding who dies and who lives. She begins to put her things back into her sack.

Theorn smiles at the unexpected complement, and nods his head to her in thank.

Elehu looks up finally, pushing aside the scrap of hide. "And now for you, Guard," she comments in a mock-stern voice, even going so far as to point a finger at Kinecha. "Just what have you been up to that you burnt that face of yours?" she adds, breaking out into a grin.

Katrine bends over to pick her bag up from the floor, haphazardly stuffing her things into it. Hoping to catch Theorn before he goes.

Theorn picks up his things slowly, smiling at katrine as he catches her eye.

Kinecha grins, the red on her face not only the color of the sunburn. Moving closer to Elehu, she whispers to the healer, "I spent a few days at Ista with Reiko." Looking around, she checks to see that the apprentices weren't listening. "Spent too much time in the sun, I guess..."

Katrine walks over to where Theorn and Mirenda are standing, "how'd you find the class?" she asks.

Theorn smiles "It was harder than i expected, but it wasnt too bad. I mean, i didnt know much, but thats what we are here for, right?

Mirenda shrugs. "Not too bad. Pediactric Mindhealing was more confusing in my opinion." she states, shrugging.

Baram blinks in from ::between::!

Elehu grins at Kinecha and winks at her. "I won't tell a soul," she whispers back to the guard. "I hope you enjoyed yourself though," she adds as she turns and rummages in a cupboard for a moment, returning with a small jar.

Mirenda calls to Baram, who flies over and lands on her shoulder.

Sudanna says, "exactly Theorn, it's amazing what we don't know until we learn it."

Katrine raises her eyebrows "pediactirc midnhealing!" Glad she has not sat through that class yet.

Sudanna grins at Mienda. "Well, Pediatric Mindhealing /should/ be a harder class, Apprentice. You are talking about a very delicate subject there. Nothing so 'cut and dried'.

Theorn looks slightly surprised at Mirenda. "I dont think i /could/ sit through that. it sounds too complicated."

Mirenda nods to Sudanna. "Yes. The poor kidlets. I like them. Mindhealing was most interesting so far, though I don't think I'd like it as a speciality."

Sudanna laughs. "Ask Jathen about that.. I think it's one of the hardest specialties we offer. Physical healing is much
easier then dealing with someone's mind.

"We did," Kinecha says, giving Elehu a crooked smile, suddenly wondering where exactly Reiko had gone to. But then, the guard had only wanted to come in here for something to put on that sunburn, not expecting a class to be taught here. "You're a good teacher, Ele," she tells the healer, nodding to the apprentices. "Seemed like they were listening."

Elehu blushes slightly at the praise as she hands over the jar. "Well... thank you, I really do enjoy it. Sometimes I wonder if maybe later on I'd like to apply to the main Healer Hall in Fort... but that's Turns down the road," she adds quickly shaking her head. "Anyway, this salve is excellent for soothing sunburns," she informs Kinecha with a smile. "Just apply it whenever the skin starts to hurt again or feels hot, itchy... anything really. You can't use too much."
