Notting Hill - I liked this movie...it was definitely funny. But I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped to. Mostly, I didn't think there was any chemistry between Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. I'd still recommend seeing it though.
Phantom Menace, Star Wars, Episode I - I hate to say this, but I hated this movie. I thought it was boring and no fun. I almost fell asleep a number of times. Maybe the future ones will be better since they won't have to spend so much time building the story.
Never Been Kissed - A high school movie made by Drew Barrymore. I enjoyed it, but it's no blockbuster. I think the storyline itself is its redeeming quality. If John Hughes had made this movie, it would have been wonderful.
Analyze This - A very funny movie with Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal. DeNiro is a mob boss that goes to see Crystal, a psychiatrist, because he's having panic attacks. I loved the acting, the story, and the writing. Hal loved it too.
EdTV - I loved this movie!!! Matthew McConnehey (sp?) was wonderful. He agrees to have his life viewed on TV 24 hours a day. It starts to cause problems and has a creative ending.
Forces of Nature - This movie has Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock. I like both of those actors but didn't like them together. The movie is OK, but not wonderful. Wait for cable.
Deep End of the Ocean - A tear jerker with Michelle Pfieffer and Treat Williams. Their son is kidnapped and shows back up 9 years later. Good story, great acting. Overall a great film.
The Other Sister - Diane Keaton stars in the movie with someone, whose name has left me for the moment. This is definitely a chick flick. My mom and I enjoyed it though. It explores what it is like to raise a child with a mental handicap and shows how those with mental handicaps are capable of surviving "on their own."
October Sky - What a wonderful movie!!! It's based on the book Rocket Boys by Homer Hickman, Jr. (which I just checked out, but haven't read yet). The movie is about a boy (Homer) that grows up in a West Virginia mining town with a dream to build rockets. He and three of his friends face all kinds of hurdles to realize this dream, with the encouragement of their science teacher. It's a great story of how much a teacher can have an impact on our life. Great movie to take the kids to since there is hardly any cussing, no nudity or sex, and very little voilence. I don't know if this will be a blockbuster at the theater, but it's definitely worth seeing.
Rushmore - This movie gets you laughing here and there, but that's about it. I don't understand what all the hype is about Bill Murray. One, he's not the main character, and two, this isn't his best work. It doesn't compare to Groundhog Day. I would only recommend seeing this movie if you've already seen Life Is Beautiful and Shakespeare in Love or if you're just a huge Bill Murray fan and your life would be incomplete without his latest movie.
A Civil Action - This is a good movie. It's kind of your run of the mill courtroom drama, but I love John Travolta, so that made the movie more enjoyable.
Life is Beautiful - One of my favorite movies of the year. It's an Italian movie with subtitles, which I thought I wouldn't like, but I did. I have a hard time understanding accents in movies so with subtitles, I understood 100%. The plot is so creative and the acting is wonderful. I loved the little boy in the movie. He did great! It deals with a serious subject (the holocaust) and doesn't downplay the seriousness of it, but much of the movie is hilarious. I hope this wins Best Picture, but I'm afraid it will lose to Saving Private Ryan. If you haven't seen this movie, go see it!!!
Shakespeare in Love - Great movie. I was able to understand what was said, which is not an easy accomplishment for me, especially with a Shakespeare film. Gwyneth Paltrow did a great job. I can say one thing though...she should NEVER get her hair cut short and dye it brown. She is an awful looking boy! I have heard that the movie isn't too accurate as to the life of Shakespeare, which is too bad. I sure liked this version and wish it was true.
She's All That - OK, so this is a high school kid's movie and I'm not anywhere close to being in high school, but I loved this movie just the same. It's simple, fun, and entertaining. I loved the characters and the story (even if it has been done a thousand times). Plus, it has a good ending.
Stepmom - Great! I loved Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon in this movie. I couldn't decide who I felt more sorry for. Both were in such a tough situation. The kids in the movie did a great job too. One warning though...take LOTS of Kleenex. They don't tell you in the previews that this movie is SAD, but it is. So be warned.
Varsity Blues - My husband made me see this movie. I HATED it. It's vulgar and childish. What more can you expect by a movie put out by MTV?
My Favorite Martian - I didn't see this movie and by reading this quote from a great reviewer, you'll see why, "In MY FAVORITE MARTIAN, we discover that there is intelligent life in our solar system, and that absolutely none of it was involved in making this film."--Scott Renshaw
