Gotta make a plan
Gotta do what's right
Can't run around in circles if you wanna build a life
But I don't wanna make a plan for a day far away
While I'm young and while I'm able
All I wanna do is play.

Of every 02 DigiDestined, perhaps the most difficult to pin down accurately is actually the "main character," Motomiya Daisuke. In many ways, this might be because he's...really...the most realistic (at least in my eyes). I mean, who do you know who has a uniformly sweet, wonderful relationship with their sibling, like TK and Matt, or Tai and Kari? On the other hand, who do you know who's relationship with their sibling is more colored by long bouts of fighting and the telling of embarrassing secrets with an occasional bright spot where everything goes great...and then things fall apart again. *Raises hand* That's me and El Niņo De Rat for you.
Daisuke isn't always wonderful, either. He's...quite accurately, I might add...occasionally summed up as a jerk. He's a sweet jerk, an understandable jerk, but still, a jerk. He's also not the smartest thing to ever show up. However, there's another character who did all that, and people like him (and, I might add, is often paired up with an angsty pretty boy character).
Yagami Taichi/Tai Kamiya. (HIS angsty pretty boy, in case you're ENTIRELY out of the loop, is Ishida Yamato/Matt Ishida.)
Why then, do people hate Daisuke?
Part of it is, certainly, his crush on Kari. I mean, at the end of 01, most of us had a set of pairings we supported. And, for even the Yaoi/Yuri crowd, one of those pairing was Takari. I mean, without other options, it seemed PERFECT, whether you thought Tai was sneaking kisses with Matt or Sora (Or Mimi. Or Izzy. Or anyone else...). And 02 made Takari an even better pairing in most peoples eyes. "HEY! They're old enough to DATE now! Isn't that sweet!" And then, suddenly, this annoying ball of...whatever...showed up out of nowhere and declared (apparently without asking the girl in question) that Kari was HIS girl. I mean, the nerve.
This is also where the "Jerk" element comes in, since not only did he declare Kari to be HIS girl, but he also tended (and still tends) to get TK's name wrong, probably out of spite (I mean, I DID say he wasn't the smartest thing...but it's TWO LETTERS. Even Daisuke isn't THAT dumb.). Most people hoped that he'd be Dramon food.
And then Tai gave him The Goggles.
Made him The Leader.
It was official.
Even if nobody else seemed to believe it. I mean, even now it sometimes seems like Daisuke shares leadership roles with Miyako. And there was only one person who seemed to consider Daisuke the leader, and that was Ken/The Kaizer (see? It IS love...). Everyone else took every possible chance to question his leadership. Matt even tried to kick his ass at one point. (Hey, a lot comes with the goggles, I guess. And only part of it is an angsty pretty boy...)
I think there might be another reason people dislike Daisuke, and I'm just going to throw it in here. It's because he's so much like Tai, and we can see how Tai grew up, while comparing him with today's Daisuke. Does that make sense? I mean, Tai is...not QUITE a grown up, but he's certainly more mature then he was when he got thrown into the Digital World the first time. He's even more mature than during the movie (I mean the second section, of course. He's...what...five in the first section? And he isn't even in the third. Daisuke is, though.). And Daisuke, well, he acts like a 12 year old. It's understandable, seeing as he IS a 12-year-old, but we're almost expecting the strong...whatever...Tai developed. Try sitting down and comparing early 01 Tai to early 02 Daisuke some day. Daisuke is actually the more mature of the two. (Man, is THAT a scary thought...)
Er...I'd say more...but it's about 3 am here. I'll write more later, okay?
