Introduction
We are bombarded everyday by ads on television,
radio and billboards
that tell us how much we need a Whopper,
Big Mac or those
wonderful little french fries. It is important
for everyone to be
aware of what they are putting into their body.
Building a healthy,
balanced diet is really not that hard. Ok, it's
not easy, but we can
all do it if we know how. In this WebQuest, we
are going to learn
what kinds of foods can help us be better eaters
and
healthier people. Over one week, each student
will complete
a chart that tracks what they are eating. At
the end of the week
each group will complete the quiz on serving
sizes
and create a poster that shows the six food groups
with examples
of food that falls into each group.
1. Fill in the food pyramid with the names of
the six food groups.
2. Write in the recommended daily serving amounts
underneath the group name for each food group.
3. Begin filling in your daily food record for
today. Include all meals, including any snacks you eat.
4. What are the 6 different nutrients that we
receive from our foods?
5. What is serving size? Why is that important?
6. At this point, you are going to divide up
the pyramid into tasks for each one of you. If there are 2 of you, everyone
will have three sections. If there are 3 of you, each of you have 2 sections.
Write the names of your sections of the pyramid down for #6.
7. Write five food examples for each of your
sections.
8. When you have completed the food labels quiz
at the end of the week, write your number correct on 8.
At home, you need to find pictures of foods from
your food group. You can use magazines, newspaper ads, etc. to find your
pictures. BRING THESE IN for the poster project.
Complete the poster as a group.
After 1 week, visit this site again and complete the food labels quiz as a group:
Take
the food labels quiz
Write your number correct on
handout 2, question number 8.
Thanks to all of your hard work, you now know all about the six food
groups
and how to eat a more healthy diet. The next time you reach for an
afterschool snack,
keep this lesson in mind and choose something on the healthy end of
the pyramid.
I'm sure your body will thank you.
