Who and where
Our names are Eilidh* and Ross, and we have been working hard to raise money to take the trip of a lifetime. And now our trip is fast approaching! There is no doubt that China will offer an enormous culture shock from the Scottish life.
Our Interests
Ross particularily enjoys wildlife especially birds and insects, whilst being a keen cyclist, musician and artist. Eilidh too has a talent for art and enjoys shoe shopping, something that will unfortunately (or fortunately) have to be put on hold until our return. We are both avid Lost fans, and we hope that a series won't be screened while we are away, and if it is, we request that no one spoils it for us until we get home and watch endless taped episodes! Eilidh is a closet Johnny Depp fan and Ross enjoys nothing more than listening to The White Stripes or his other favourite "band of the moment".
Why take a gap year?
As a couple, we decided that taking a gap
year would be highly beneficial to both of us. It will give us
confidence, drive, exhilaration and a sense of achievement. As
enthusiatic, motivated people a gap year gives us some goals to
stride towards and improve our own and other peoples lives. A gap
year to China will give us, ignoring the cliche, an oppurtunity
of a lifetime. We will be able to reflect on the experience for
many years, the highs and the lows, and our gap year will quench
our thirst to see the world. For some the world passes by
undiscovered but we want to see, feel, taste, hear, reach out to
the world and appreciate our ever-changing environment while we
can. We don't want to tell ourselves "I'll do it
someday", we want it to happen in the close future. This is
merely our shared ambition, and we want to not just help
ourselves to the world but help children become better educated
and themselves one day realise what the world has to offer them.
We figured that taking a gap year together would be sensible in
terms of safety in numbers, and also because we can offer each
other support and advice when things in an odd environment takes
its toll. We also work really well together in a team, and any
arguments we always come out with a good resolve and compromise.
Our qualitites compliment each other, with Eilidh's excellent
organisational skills and Ross' brilliant ideas (one of which was
this whole gap year!).
The future
We both intend to go to Dundee University, perhaps a surprise as you would think that we would prefer to go further afar instead of 15 minutes away from Eilidh and 30 from Ross. Regardless, Dundee still has alot to offer, with Ross planning to do Zoology and Eilidh BSc Psychology. Ross has many aspirations, one day hoping to do some biological research, lecturing and even teaching. Eilidh would like to continue Psychology into post-grad and hopefully end up doing Clinical Psychology. Of course, things might change, but for now, the future looks pretty good!
