| Biography Born in Shibuya, Tokyo in 1960. Tsukamoto was making films on Hi-8 from the age of 14. He was also an active painter as well as writing, directing and starring in plays for the Kaiju Theatre group which he helped to create. Tsukamoto decided to focus on his dream of being a filmaker in 1985 and his feature film debut was Futsu Saizu no Kaijin (Phantom of Regular Size) in 1986. The release of Tetsuo:The Iron Man propelled Tsukamoto to the forefront of international cult cinema. With it's unconventional subject matter and it's combination of grainy black and white images with stop-motion animation, Tetsuo was unlike anything most audiences had ever seen! The following companion piece Tetsuo II:Body Hammer was a more balanced movie but still managed to retain most of the visual chaos which helped to establish it's predecessor. As well as writing and directing, Tukamoto appears in both his own films and in the films of others, including appearing in several movies by Takashi Miike. |
