SIERRA RAILWAY - PAGE 2
Engine #28, mostly together.  I wasn't really interested in getting a shot of the engine all together, but was instead more interested in shots of the work in progress.  However, the crew made an extra effort to get things back together so I could get a shot, so I felt obligated to do so.
Roundhouse and Turntable.  The little diesel switcher is being used to push #28 back into her stall.  She is almost as interesting as the steam engines:  Only 2 traction motors with side rods connecting to the other wheelsets.

Another shay sits on a track to the right, and the cab for #3 is on the ground to the left.
Here is the running gear for Shay #2.  The photo was converted to Black and White, but the color version didn't look much different.

As with all Shay's, 3 small cylinders are mounted vertically on the Engineer's side of the boiler.  These are connected to a crankshaft, which runs along the entire engine.  Bevel gears turn the drive wheels, which are located in trucks.

Shay's were designed to pull heavy loads at slow speeds, up steep grades, over rough track.
Front view of Shay #2, minus the smokebox front.  Note the offset boiler to compensate for the cylinders and drive train.

Latest I heard was that #2 should be operational by the end of the summer.
