ROARING CAMP & BIG TREES RAILROAD
The RR operates Geared Steam Locomotives, designed to operate over rough track and steep grades.  This is a 2 truck Heisler, the first such engine I have ever seen under steam.

In the foreground is a recreated, fully operational, steam powered sawmill.  They opereate it as a demonstration several times a year.  Although there was no logging actually done on the property, much effort has been made to re-create the image of a logging operation in the area.
Upper Left - The boiler is being 'blown down' a process designed to remove the sediment from the water.

Heislers have 2 cylinders, one on each side of the locomotive.  They point down and in, in effect forming a V-2 configuration.  The cylinders turn a drive shaft which runs along the centerline of the locomotive.  Beveled gears turn the drive axle on each of the 4 wheel trucks.  Siderods connect to the other axle.
The fireman deboards at the top of the hill amidst towering Redwoods.

Below- A time honored tradition of filling the tender with water.
