| President of Egypt, serving from October 15, 1970 until his assassination. He is considered to be one of the most important and influential Egyptian and Arab figures in modern history. At home, there was considerable domestic opposition, especially among fundamentalist Muslim groups. October 6, 1981, Sadat died at the hands of fundamentalist assassins during a military review celebrating the 1973 Suez crossing. |
