On April 20, 1919 the United States recognized the British protection of Egypt. This all but ended the hope the Egyptians had of being free.

In 1936 the Anglo-Egyptian treaty was signed which gave Egypt a little bit of independence although superficially.

In July of 1942, the British were pushed back almost to Alexandria. Rommel stopped at Alamein

Because his troops were exhausted and almost out of supplies. Montgomery took over the Eighth

Army in the desert and moved them to Alamein. He won this battle in October or November of

1942. Then began Egypt�s national liberation.
A constitution was created on September 11, 1971.

Egypt is now known as the Arab Republic of Egypt. It is now a republic with the current President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak.

THE SIX DAY WAR
The Six-Day War was fought between Israel and its Arab neighbours Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. In the months before June 1967, Egypt called for unified Arab action against Israel.

In June 1967, Israel launched a pre-emptive attack on Egypt's airforce. Jordan then attacked western Jerusalem and Netanya. At the war's end, Israel had gained control of eastern Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights. Egypt had lost much of its land to the small country of Israel.
