UP THE HILL AND OUT THE DOOR
APRIL 11-17, 2008
TRACKBED REACHES THE DOOR - All week I had progressed with suspending the trackbed along the wall.  On Friday night I cut the portal and fit that last piece, made of 3/4 inch plywood, and chopped the sill to keep it as low as possible.
BUDD CAR REACHES THE DOOR - Sunday morning I installed about 30 feet of track, and by 11:15 the new track had reached the portal.  The Budd Car was the first train to climb the hill in its entirety.
THE BUDD POKES ITS HEAD OUT - Actually it's the back of the car but you get the idea, right?
ANOTHER DOOR AHEAD - The track will curve to the left in this picture and exit out the side of the Bilco door.
NEW ENGINE AT THE NEW DOOR - The Western Maryland GP-40 has been out of its box for only 10 days, and now it's climbed out of the basement.
COAL TRAIN ON THE HILL - The engine had no trouble pulling the train up the hill.  There is still a bit of work to do to finish up the track supports.
HOLE IN THE BILCO DOOR - After a few intense days of doing taxes, I was glad to get back to railroad work.  The steel here was about a 16th of an inch thick. CUTTING COMPLETE - Finally the slow process of cutting is done, and we have a view of the garden.  Soon we'll be starting the outdoor railroad.
TRACK INSTALLED - The next day the paint was dry and I installed the curved track.  It's about a 60 inch radius.  We'll use the Budd Car to check clearances. KEEP YOUR HEAD AND ARMS INSIDE THE WINDOW - There's not a whole lot of side clearance at this spot!
BUDD IN THE GARDEN - The Budd Car is popping out of the new opening.  There are a lot of flowers budding this time of year!
FIRST TIME IN THE SUN - The afternoon sun shines brightly on the new Western Maryland GP-40.  I wonder how long it will stay this clean!
