At
the early age of 5, Edric has discovered his passion for performing on stage.
As a student of River Valley High School, he often won trophies at various
singing contests and school events. Joining
the SAF Music & Drama Company during his national service, however, he
literally took his interest in performing to a new stage. Besides public
performances and roadshows, he was also exposed to other professional music
opportunities, such as co-writing and recording the Mandarin theme song of TCS
8’s <Extraordinary People>. Amidst recording various TV and radio commercials, Edric
also performed backing vocals for many local and international artistes like
Sandy Lam, Tracy Huang, Dick Lee, Jacintha etc, as well as Broadway stars like
Sean Ghazi, Roanne Monte, Leo Valdez and Joanna Ampil. Edric
has sung in several charity galas and concerts like <In Celebration of
Musical Theatre> and <Babes & Friends…Again>. In 2001, he was a
soloist in <A Musical Nite Out>, a tribute concert to the musicals of
Rodgers and Hammerstein, held at Library@Orchard, as well as SAF MDC’s
<Tribute To Broadway> concert at Victoria Concert Hall, and performed
with Jacintha and Gani for Philips’ 50th Anniversary event. His
ambition to appear on Broadway led to several acting involvements in the local
musical theatre scene, in shows like <Kampong Amber>, <Mortal
Sins>, <December Rains>, and <Beauty World> etc. In the recent
runs of <Chang & Eng – The Musical>, he understudied both titular
roles, and during the 1999 extended season, took on the leading role of Eng. Besides
Theatreworks’ <Not Children>, a dramatised play-read in which he played
the leading role of a stern Temple Master, Edric also garnered rave reviews for
his memorable performances in Rainbow Theatre’s musical productions
<Sayang>, as well as in the fund-raising <Song of the Whale>, in
which Edric guest-starred as King Asuhr-dan III of Nineveh. Early this year,
Edric took on another heavy role, that of an unappreciated Vietnamese painter,
in the monologue <Bui Xuan Phai – A Portrait Of An Artist>. Offstage, he has also appeared in several local films and
educational videos. In 2001, Edric played the lead role of a quiet
student/postal worker in a local short movie <The Postal Rule>. The next
year, he was involved in another local sci-fi short film, <Ragdoll>, in
which he played an interrogating scientist. On TV, Edric has appeared as a
police officer in Kids’ Central’s second season of <Kids United> (Episode
14-“In Polite Company”), as well as a school teacher in <Champs> (“Keat
Loon”). Effectively bilingual, he recently participated in an original
Mandarin play, <Goodbye Again, Cambridge>, based on the life story of Hsu
Chih-Mo, China’s revolutionary poet. Edric played the supporting role of Liang
Ssu-Cheng. In May this
year, Edric returned with the Singapore I-Lien Drama Society troupe from a
performance of <Oz> at South Korea’s Masan International Theatre Festival
2003. He not only designed the sound tracks as well as performed the sound
operations during the play, Edric also composed the original theme songs, which
got the audience humming along even after the performance. He also sang songs
from the “Sing, Singapore” collection during the cultural exchange events. Recent
projects also include playing the role of Wee Boon Kiat in the “Decisions”
episode of Mediacorps’ new TV series <Family Matters>, as well as the
leading role of the murdered Vice-President of American Express bank, Frankie
Tan, in the new season of <True Files>, Episode “Jealousy Knows No
Limits”. The latter show was telecast on 4th November 2003. Also on TV,
Edric can be seen in the recent MobileOne (M1)’s MiWorld TV commercial. Coming
up next, he will appear in his mentor Babes Conde’s series of TV concerts on
Arts Central, in which he sings solo in another “Sing, Singapore” song,
<Voices From The Heart>, and together with Babes, John Lee and Peter Lee
in the new a cappella song <Katong>. At the
Esplanade Concert Hall, on 12th October 2003, Edric performed again
with Babes and other singers in her mini-concerts of familiar local-flavoured
songs, to celebrate the Esplanade’s first anniversary. In November
2003, Edric played a threatening Japanese soldier and re-enacted scenes from
the World War II history at Fort Siloso, Sentosa, as a part of the <Fort
Siloso Live Show>, an educational guided tour for students. Edric’s most
recent involvement was in Garricks Theatre N Production’s new Chinese musical
<Happy Ghost>, based on the popular 80s Hong Kong movie. Starring Samuel
Chong and Sharon Au among other HK and local celebrities, this production was
staged at Victoria Theatre between 24th December 2003 and 1st
January 2004. Also, a second run of <Oz> by I-Lien, for which Edric was
once again engaged to compose several new songs, was presented in mid-February
2004 at Jubilee Hall. Edric is
currently a part-time radio presenter at the SAFRA Radio’s Mandarin Station, Dongli883 FM,
co-hosting the lunch-time entertainment segment. Edric has been a member
of the Association of Singapore Actors since its inauguration in December 2001,
and has recently joined the committee for the period of 2004 to 2005. A
Queensland University of Technology graduate, Edric hopes to bring his
ambitions of being an all-rounded performer to many different stages! (Updated on 23rd February 2004) |
