John Candler 1782-1835

This (link at left) is a nice genealogy list for the descendants of John Candler of Ohio. Yet another John, he was the son of William Candler (1751-1836) and Agnes Guthrie (probably). He is listed in the 1820 Federal census of Campbell County, VA (see my analysis of 1820 Census).

I believe that John was the first male Candler to settle permanently in Ohio.

John's 1st cousin, Zachariah Candler (c1773-1845), son of Zedikiah Candler and Anna Moorman was at Fort Hamilton in 1793 with the VA militia. Zachariah lived in Kentucky for a while, but finally settled in North Carolina.

John's aunt, Jane Candler (c1760-1807) married James Guthrie in Campbell County, VA in1778. Jane died in 1807 (in VA) and sometime thereafter James and his children moved to Ohio.

Many South River Quakers migrated to Ohio in the decades before the Civil War. The family of Jonothan and Judith Douglas Johnson was one of these (moving to Harrison County in southeastern Ohio). William Buford Candler (1814-1892) was born in Lynchburg but married Susanna Johnson (1814-1857) in Harrison County in 1846. Susanna was also born in Lynchburg.

Buford Candler was the son of Daniel Candler (1788-1860) and Mildred Candler (1791-1846). Mildred died in Harrison County in 1846. Whether she went to Ohio for the wedding of her son and died there I do not know. Her husband (Daniel) is buried on Candler's mountain. Buford and Susanna moved back to Lynchburg (exactly when I do not know).
