MALE SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Males usually enter puberty between the ages of 10 and 14.

  • The first physical signs are growth of the testes and penis, accompanied or followed by growth of pubic and other body hair.

  • Changes in the larynx cause a deepening of the voice and growth of an “Adam’s apple.”

  • Males also demonstrate an increase in facial hair that begins with a mustache and within a few years extends over most of the lower face.

  • Rising testosterone levels stimulate increased muscle mass during the growth spurt, and male biceps, shoulder, and thigh muscles grow larger than in girls.

  • During the growth spurt, breast tissue may develop in up to two-thirds of adolescent boys, but this usually disappears in about 6 months (although in some it may persist for a year or longer). Occasionally a source of embarrassment, male breast tissue usually is not a sign of any abnormality.

  • Ejaculations begin between the ages of 11 and 15, although any time between the ages of 8 and 21 is considered normal. Ejaculation may occur during sleep or in response to masturbation or a sexual fantasy.

  • Adolescence usually is completed by the age of 17 or 18; growth may continue until the age of 20 or 21 (Tapley et al.).

A few generations ago, many people warned that masturbation caused warts, pimples, blindness, and hair on your palms. If that were true, there would be a lot of warty, pimply, blind, hairy people walking around!
