identity development

IDENTITY

An earlier stage of identity development is the foundation for identity in adolescence. If during childhood or early adolescence there have been problems, identity confusion may result in adolescence.

  • Identity of adolescence is created from modeling parents, friends, and people close to them.

  • Areas of identity are love, work, and ideology.

  • Identity versus identity confusion can be healthy or unhealthy.

    • Healthy: definite sense of who they are and how they fit into the world

    • Unhealthy: not formed a stable and secure identity

SELF, ALONE

  • Adolescents spend time alone to reflect on self-conceptions, self-esteem, emotional states, and identity.

  • They are by themselves one-quarter of the time.

  • After time alone, adolescents feel refreshed.

  • Too much time alone can create sad and lonely feelings.

  • Too much time alone can create school problems, depression, and other psychological difficulties.
