Welcome to New York, A.D. 2188. The Earth's democracies have fused into an oligarchy, ruling its citizens with terror and violence. The arts have gone 'underground', as all art besides commercial art has been banned, as it could cause thoughts of revolution or rebellion. The majority of the population exists in mind-numbed fear, doing as the government directs. However, the Underground hosts all manner of rebels, from artists, programmers, and musicians to outlaws, political opposition, and religious leaders. New York is ruled by the Council of Seven, seven men and women that lead large corporations, military units, and scientific laboratories. Technology has swiftly advanced, especially in the fields of genetics, engineering, computers, and physics. Part-cyborg humans are not uncommon; there are even the rare androids, although nowhere approaching human intelligence. Whatever area on Earth not sealed into huge metropolises is poisoned by pollution, with the rare small rebel outpost.
Over the years, through evolution, expirimentation, and rising levels of pollution, certain individuals have gained extraordinary abilities. These remarkable people make up an astounding 25% of the population; some of them may even be able to transform into specialized warriors. Many of these have joined a radical anti-government group known as the Children of Eden. Rumour says that the Children and the Council both strive for the same goal - the recovery of the lost paradise, Eden - and world domination. The Children are also based in New York, although it is well known that they have operatives worldwide. The Children, however, are not only made up of these individuals, internally known as the Soldiers of Eden; there are others, those who specialize in the sciences, thievery, espionage, hacking, and strongarm tactics. The Children are said to be led by a mysterious woman known only as Atra, meaning 'Dead Black'. She is also rumored to be the strongest of the Soldiers. |
