Childhood - The Path to Success - The Future

Childhood

Picture of Lake Meadows, BillericayLaura was born on November 4th, 1985 in Basildon, Essex and has resided 'since birth' in the nearby town of Billericay, a picturesque area which Laura describes succinctly as 'nice and leafy!'. When not concentrating on her writing, Laura is an avid theatregoer and amateur dramatic society member, recently appearing for Stock Drama Group in 'A Chorus of Disapproval'. Enjoying an active and eclectic lifestyle, Laura also works full-time in the soothing and muse-inspiring surroundings of a local bookshop and is a keen traveller, museum visitor and animal lover, owning a Shetland sheepdog named Splash.

The author admits to having a somewhat sketchy recollection of her childhood, but remembers 'having cute blonde curls and having [her] cheeks pinched on a regular basis by old people' and being an extremely keen horse rider.

When asked to recall her most memorable childhood experience, Laura's response is a somewhat disconcerting one: 'I was in Devon with my family on holiday. We rented the most gorgeous National Trust cottage out by Golden Cap and then went to Sidmouth to the donkey sanctuary where I adopted this cute little thing called Dominic who tried to eat me!'. As is true of the characters in 'Envelope of a Letter', it is clearly unwise to judge donkeys by appearance alone. At the age of eleven, Laura successfully passed her exams to achieve a place at Chelmsford High School for Girls, meeting the people who would become her most longstanding friends and supporters and also unknowingly sowing the seeds for her writing career.

Afflicted by a dehabilitating eating disorder as a teenager, Laura devoted her recovery time to metaphorically devouring the classics, succumbing to the charms of 'Wuthering Heights', 'Jane Eyre' and 'Pride and Prejudice' and discovering an innate creative urge which was fostered and encouraged by impressed teachers in her English classes at school. This first manifested itself, as she remembers with some amusement, when she was fourteen with her composition of a short story intriguingly entitled 'Mikey the Mint'.
