Case Studies
CASE STUDIES.  The "case study" is based on the Case Method at Harvard Business School.  In this course, we will use a variant of the HBS case method to study 5 different cases.  The way it will work is  as follows.  The case will appear on this web page as a link.  A new cased will be posted by the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th class periods.  The case will be briefly discussed during that class period.  Students will then have until then next class period to do preliminary research on the case and must come to class prepared to discuss the case in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th class period.  One hour will be devoted to the case.  Students will then be required to write up a report on the case by the following class as indicated oin the syllabnus.  Each case will be evaluated on a 5 point scale with 2 points allocated to class participation and 3 points allocated to the report.  The format for the report is described below.
CASE STUDY REPORT FORMAT.  Cases will be conducted in class in two sessions.  The first session will be about 30 minutes with the instructor explaining the case and  students asking questions.  Students then study the written case and come to the next class prepared for a rigorous discussions.  Students deliberate the case in depth for an hour.  Oral participation is part of  the evaluation.  After the case is delivberated, each individual student writes a report consisting of 3-5 pages of free form text analyzing the case.  The report should reach a conclusion or business decision based on a sound analysis of the business situation proposed and a logical description of the thinking that leads to the result.  No specific outline is required and each student may organize the report in any way that accomplished  the goal, including charts, graphs, Internet research, essays or scenario analysis.  Reports will be evaluated for quality, depth and presentation.
