Here's how:

First, choose an event

-If you are interested in
Dramatic Interp, Humorous Interp, or Duo Interp, you need to find a script. It is highly suggested that you rely on our own library of scripts, since good ones are extremely hard to find!
If you already have a script for one of these events, be memorizing it. You need to memorize before you start working on technique. It helps so much to have the words down!

-If you're interested in
Original Oratory, think of a topic, do some research, and start writing! Thinking of a topic is the hardest and most vital part of writing your speech.

-If your interest is either
Storytelling or Prose/Poetry, check out our library (look for books with S or PP on the spine, but many of the other books might work as well). For Prose/Poetry, keep in mind that there must be a theme that links all of the pieces you use.

-For
Impromptu, be quizzing yourself. In other words, close your eyes and open them. What's the first thing you see? Think about how you would plan a 3-5 minute speech on it. Remember that planning is the key to Impromptu...think of three clear points that you can make on the topic.

-For
Lincoln Douglas Debate and Public Forum Debate, check the North Carolina Speech and Debate website at this link: www.ncspeechanddebate.org/topics.htm regularly to find out topics (Lincoln Douglas topics change every two months and Public Forum changes every month). Start researching your topic and planning your argument ASAP! Bring your work to meetings

-For
Student Congress, check with Oliver at [email protected]
to find out when they have posted the bills for each tournament. In the meantime, be reading up on current events. Check out the periodical
s (Newsweek and US News and World Report) in our library.

-For
Extemporaneous Speaking, check out the periodicals (Newsweek and US News and World Report) in our library. Watch the news every night. Make www.cnn.com your homepage. Read up on everything you can with current events, national and international!
