| So, what is Speech and Debate all about? How is it going to help you, both right now and later in life? Most importantly: is it all worth getting up early on a Saturday morning? Way, way back in 2002, Early College was born. In its first year, sophmores Sarah Stephens and Josh Debottis (sometimes known as 'Speech and Debottis') came determined to start Speech and Debate at Early College as they had enjoyed it so much as freshmen at their sender schools. They planted the Speech and Debate bug at Early College, and the rest is history. Speech and Debate is, in many ways, about the events that we go to perform in at the tournaments. To read more about them, go to our events page. There's more to tournaments than that, though. Through early morning and late night drives to tournaments, Egyptian Rat Screw between rounds, and Elizabeth's Pizza when we get home, you'll get to know--and occasionally love--the team. By the end of the year, you'll have heard everyone's script so many times you could probably give their speeches yourself: that just makes it better when they win a trophy. You'll make Speech and Debate friends from other high schools; a special bond is shared between people who know the nervous joy of round posting and the post-1st-round wave of relief. In short, we have a good time. On a more serious (and forward-thinking) note, the public speaking skills and confidence you'll learn in Speech and Debate will help you wherever you go in life. Public speaking is the number one fear among American adults! To overcome that in your high school years gives you an edge when applying for college and jobs (and not to be shallow, but being a member of the National Forensics League looks especially nice on college applications). Speech and Debate at Early College is a wonderful opportunity for fun, learning, and bonding. Use this site to learn more about it. If you have any questions, contact Eden Garner at [email protected] or come to one of our meetings! We hope to see you at the next tournament! |
