January 2002: Working on 305 parts:

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETNow, it is time for the old 305 to give the missing parts like intake manifold, HEI distributor, Q-jet carb, exhaust manifolds.

I begin by removing the hood.
The tonneau seems to be a good place to store it.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETThen, I remove the Q-jet and store it with the hood.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETNext step, taking off the intake manifold
(As soon as I succeed to unscrew the unreacheable bolt...)

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETSome inside views of what was going on under the intake manifold...
Ark, very very cloged by tar carbon deposits and tar or shoe polish.
Now, I DO appreciate to have bought a NEW engine (how to clean this mess?)

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETA view from intake and heating ports, you can admire how dirty are the valve.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETUp or down, this intake manifold is a dirty one.
Even the ports are dirt...

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETI put a washer to set the play at 0.005" like explained in the "bible".

You can see it behind open at the right page...

Then I do some cleaning on the distributor,

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETI take off the heat shield that is supposed to prevent oil to burn on the heated intake.

Well, it's a carbon mine!

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETAnd  now the nicest part:
cleaning the manifold from this kind of shoe polish that years have put on...
I'm surprised to see how hot water and washing powder can be efficient.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETLike I've done on the heads, I put a intake gasket on the manifold to see if some adjustements have to be done:

Bingo!

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETThe upper views are ports 5-7 and 1-3,

and these are 2-4 and 6-8 ports views.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETAluminium porting job is waaaaaay more easy than cast porting ;o). The problem is that it's too easy!
You can dig a hole without notice it before it's too late.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETPorting in progress, lot of material gone.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETThere are adjustements to do under the carburetor.

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETRounding sharp angles and very rought surfaces to soften are the main targets.

The intake manifold begins to have a better look...

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETEven it is not supposed to have much gain on performances, I spend some time on the appearance.

It looks better than new (Anyway, I don't know how it looked when it was new...)

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETI planed to stop the heating system. This will bring some improvements by increasing the density of the mixture.
First, I grind a place to receive the future plug by enlarging the exhaust circulation port.
In a paper, I cut the exact plug's shape then I can draw it on an aluminium sheet

DO NOT CLICK YETDO NOT CLICK YETOnce I've made the plug, I put it in the hole enlarged before.
I tap nicely with a hammer until it fits exactly. Aluminium is nice to work.

I 've also done a plug for the other side.
