    The Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University employs the credit system to manage its teaching activities. The Faculty operates courses for Bachelor, Master�s and Doctorate degrees. All programmes require full-time study. The Faculty uses a semester system for the Bachelor degree and a three-term system for postgraduate degrees. At the postgraduate level, the Faculty offers one Master�s programme in Thai, four international Master�s programmes, and one international Dissertation Doctorate programme. The international programmes are taught in English.

    Bachelor of Economics Programme

    The Bachelor of Economics programme at Chulalongkorn University is normally completed within 4 years (8 semesters) by full-time students.

    In order to obtain the degree, all students must complete at least 133 credit units, which are made up of the following components:

    • 37 credits of general education
    • 66 credits in compulsory core courses in economics
    • 27 credits in specific fields of economics (major & minor) 
    • 3 credits from elective courses.

    By the fifth semester, students are required to select their major from one of the following 9 fields:

    1. Economic development
    2. International Economics
    3. Economics of Public Finance
    4. Monetary Economics
    5. Quantitative Economics
    6. Labour and Human Resource Economics
    7. Economics of Agriculture and Agri-business
    8. Economics of Environment and Natural Resources
    9. Business and Managerial Economics

    In their final year, undergraduate students are required to submit either a research paper or attending a research workshop according to their selected major.


    Master of Economics Programme
    The Faculty offers a one-year Master�s programme in 9 areas of economics:
    1. Health Economics
    2. Political Economy
    3. Quantitative Economics
    4. Economic Development
    5. Public Finance Economics
    6. Monetary Economics
    7. International Economics
    8. Labour and Human Resource Economics
    9. Business and Managerial Economics

    To qualify for the degree, students are required to complete 36 credit units. They have to select either Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis).


    International Master�s Degrees

    Four international programmes are available in the Faculty, all of one-year duration. Students are required to complete 36 credit units. All the programmes have 8 compulsory core courses, each lasting one month and each earning 3 credits. When students have completed these 24 credits, they are required to choose between 2 alternatives. Under Plan A, students prepare a thesis within a time-span of four months. Under Plan B, students must take 4 more courses and pass a comprehensive examination. The comprehensive examination may be taken 2 times only.

    1. Master of Science in Environmental & Natural Resource Economics

    This study programme focuses on the application of economic principles to the analysis of environmental and natural resource issues within an interdisciplinary perspective. The course increases the understanding of the integration of economics with other social and environmental sciences. The course also focuses on the formulation of environmental and natural resource policies in Thailand and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

    Graduates of this programme will be specialists on environmental issues and policy making. They will be equipped to apply economic principles to issues concerning environmental resources, to carry out independent research, and to formulate environmental-related policies and supervise their implementation in both the government and private sectors.

    2. Master of Science in Health Economics

    The major objectives of the course are to enable students to apply economic principles and tools to analyse health care practices, to understand the nature and implications of health policy options and to improve the decision-making process in the health sector. In order to fulfill these objectives, the course encompasses both theory and applications to problem-solving issues in health sector.

    In this programme, a thesis is compulsory. All students are required to write a short research thesis and make an oral presentation at the end of the course work.

    3. Master of Arts in Business and Managerial Economics

    The programme is designed to produce professional economists who can contribute to the formulation of corporate strategies and government policies. Students will be able to integrate economic principles with business and managerial practices in order to improve decision making within the current environment of globalization.

    Graduates will be professionals who keep pace with the rapid growth of the international economy and meet the expertise and management needs of companies involving in global business.

    Doctor of Philosophy Programme in Economics

    The Ph.D. Programme also employs three-term system. It is a research programme without course work. A student is required to register between 9-12 credit units per semester. At the beginning of the programme, the student works under the guidance of a senior advisor until judged ready to sit for the Qualifying Examination.

    After passing the examination, the student will become a Ph.D. candidate and be required to submit a dissertation proposal for approval. After the dissertation proposal is approved and before the dissertation work is submitted, the Ph.D.student must either present relevant research papers at a national conference not less than three times, OR have no less than three articles published in a national or international academic journal. These presentation papers or articles will be assessed by the Students� Committee of the Advisors. The student will submit a full dissertation for final examination and is required to make its oral defence.
