Aim

  • To develop high-level research capability in both theoretical and empirical aspects
  • To develop research specialists with the international perspective required for globally oriented economic and social development

Approach

This is a research-oriented study programme with no course work. A doctorate student is assigned to work with a senior supervisor who provides continuous assessment of the student’s performance. The successful student must pass a qualifying examination; after which, they become eligible to submit a dissertation proposal for approval. The final dissertation examination must be completed within 5 years after registration. The total number of credits for the completed programme is 48.

Qualifications of Eligible Applicants

  • Applicants should have completed a Master’s degree in Economics or equivalent in related fields from an accredited academic institution that meets the requirement of our Ministry of University Affairs and has been approved by the Graduate School’s Programme Committee.
  • Applicants should have a TOEFL score of no less than 550 points or an equivalent English-language qualification, unless they are native English speakers.
  • Applicants whose mother language is English, a second language qualification is required according with the Graduate College regulations.
  • Applicants must already have defined a research topic for their dissertation.

Study Programme

The Doctor of Philosophy Programme in Economics is a full time study programme. Therefore students must register for all three terms of the academic year. Students are required to enroll for not less than 9 and not more than 12 credits per term.

Students must register and study under the guidance of an academic advisor for a period not less than 2 terms but not more than 2 academic years before they become eligible for the Qualifying Examination. During this period, the student is obliged to present a seminar paper for at least twice per academic year.

Students who have passed the Qualifying Examination will be classified as Ph.D. candidates

Students who have been assessed on not less than 9 credits, and who have passed the Qualifying Examination are eligible to submit a dissertation proposal for approval. A successful doctorate student must receive approval for one's dissertation proposal within three academic years after registration.

After the dissertation proposal is approved and before the dissertation is submitted, the student must either present a technical paper at a national conference not less than three times, or have not less than three articles published in an accredited academic journal. These technical academic papers or articles will be assessed by the student’s committee of advisers.

A doctorate student must submit a dissertation for final examination and be required to make an oral defense of one's dissertation. The dissertation must be an original contribution to the field of study. A successful student should complete the examination within 5 years after registration.

The doctorate student should attend academic activities organised by the study programme.

Computer Facilities

Up-to-date computer facilities for students and staff are provided by the Faculty's Computer Service Centre. All computers in the faculty are linked up to the university's network by cable and students have full access to all of their services. Within the Faculty, a Local Area Network is setup to facilitate the data flows from computer to computer for the whole faculty building. GIS technology is also available to all students to make a map of regional figures.

The following documents must be submitted with the Application Form:

  • Transcripts of previous degrees (bachelor’s and master’s degree.)
  • Two recommendations from unrelated persons, who are able to evaluate your academic and/or professional performance.
  • Proposed research topic (3 A4 size, typed pages).
  • TOEFL score or an equivalent English language qualification, for non-native English speaking applicants.
  • Photograph of the applicant.
  • Cheque/money order for application fee, payable to the Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University.
  • Photocopy of identification card/passport.

1
