Steamboats and Canals
In 1817 a steamboat came up the Ohio River from New Orleans. It was important to be able to travel up the river as well as down the river. In the years after that many steamboats were built in Cincinnati. It became an important stop for people and supplies.
The Miami and Erie Canal brought people and goods from different parts of Ohio so they could travel to Pittsburg, Louisville, St. Louis, Memphis and New Orleans on the rivers. |

Porkopolis |
|
|
|
|
|
Farmers first allowed their pigs to eat the acorns and nuts in the forest around Cincinnati. When the forests were cut to make furniture, houses and boats, the pigs roamed the streets. They served as garbage collectors. They were everywhere. Children even rode them. The pigs provided new industry for the city: leather, lard, meat, candles and soap.
A visitor to Cincinnati once called it a "city of pigs". A banker was proud of the meat packing industry and gave the city the nickname "Porkopolis." |

The Queen City |

The fountain was made out of bronze in Munich, Germany. It was paid for by a rich man in honor of his brother-in-law. It shows water is good for drinking, rain for crops, putting out fires, and taking baths. Around the bottom you can see boys riding a snake, a bird, a dolphin, and a turtle. The woman at the top is 9 ft. tall. |

Crosley Field was the home of the Cincinnati Reds up until Riverfront Stadium opened in 1970. This new stadium was used for both baseball and football. The baseball team is known as the Cincinnati Reds. The football team is known as the Cincinnati Bengals.
Eventually the Bengals built their own stadium known as Paul Brown Stadium. And in 2003 the Cincinnati Reds built The Great American Ballpark. |

Barney Kroger started his business in 1883 with a small grocery store painted bright red. He had some new ideas for selling groceries. He put the price on each item, gave out coupons, and advertised in newspapers! He opened store after store in the city and then in other cities. He called his idea the "chain store." |

Harley Procter heard a quote in chruch one Sunday and was inspired to name Procter and Gamble's new white soap "Ivory". In 1879 a worker left a vat of white soap mixing too long and the frothy result was a soap that floated. That was good when laundry was done by hand in wash tubs. |
