September 29, 2001: Start of the KNSB Competite: Round 1: Zeist 1 vs Vogelwijk 1

My opponent, Leon van Tol, is the reigning champion of his club. He got a one pawn edge from his English Opening reverse dragon. I had to rely on the bishop of opposite colors to save the half point, which I managed to salvage from two pawns down positions in the middle game. The game started from 13:00 and finished at 19:25.
Iverall, Vogelwijk lost 3-5, but still managed to finished at 6th place in 3E.

September 28, 2001: Start of the 2001 HSB PK Senioren TournamentL Round 1

I threatened Bas Kommer 2004 with a mate in one move after he grabbed my f pawn. In post mortem analysis, it became clear he missed the 7th move of the combination (b4!) which allowed me to escape checks.

September 27, 2001: Start of Haagse Toren Internie: Round 1 Phase 1

I lost against the Sicilian Naijdorf of Jos Willemse 2002 ( the Champion of Ooievaar) after gainig an opening advantage from his Bd7 line.

September 25, 2001: Start of Vogelwijk Internie: Round 1

I defeated Hans van Schagen with the white pieces when Hans miscalculated the rook intrusion via the c file.

September 21-23, 2001: DD Weekend Toernooi Den Haag

I skipped the tournament as I was busy painting my house.

September  15, 2001: Optiver Snelschaak

To speed up the recovery of my chess power, I participated in this rapid tournament. I played in group 2 with Patrick de Bas and two strong players from Rotterdam, Brandenburg (overschie)2243  and ___ 1947. I lost a two knights game against de Bas, lost against Brandenburg after gaining a pawn in the opening and lost from a Bird opening. The three losses was a disappointment but not an embarassment as I achieved my goal of getting closer to shape.

September 11,2001: Vogelwijk: Jacob Kort Simultaan

Last year, I lost to Jakob Kort when I treid to be spectacular with a rook sacrifice for a knight. This time, I just tried to play a solid defense with the Black pieces. I got a slightly inferior middle game position but with stubborn defense, my position became better. When my pieces came out of thier domain, Jakob Kort quickly got into trouble and soon after lost.

Erwin attended a social call from Lynn from 19:30 to 23:30.

August 25, 2001: Botvinnik Open Rapid

Erwin could not play in this tournament which he regularly participates becasue he is still in the US.

July 22, 2001: Dieren Open Rapid

Erwin got the oppurtunity to play in Dieren by participating in the Open Rapid. He took the oppurtunity to gain experience in the French Defense (3 games), including on eagainst GM Brodsky in round 1. The GM declined to play the normal lines of the French Winawer by deviating with 2.d3.  Erwin was not afraid to sacrifice a pawn against the Grandmaster and got good counter play. Erwin lost becasue he sacrificed his rook when Qf5 would have given him a solid position.
Erwin met Kachun Lui but could not do much agaisnt the Veresov opening. Erwin made the mistake of grabbing the g pawn and failed to followed it up, losing the queen for a rook.
Erwin got the consolation by holding Rob van Helvort to a draw with the French.

July 12, 2001: Erwin Casareno was in Canada and did not play in round 4.

July 5, 2001: Haagsche Zomer Competitie Round 3:

With K van der Meer and Croes not playing, Erwin got Zalme as his opponent in round 3. Erwin buckled the 45 minute deficit to win in 18 minutes as Zalme did not use his time advantage very well. Erwin developed his pieces normally and launched an attack on the Black King in the center. Erwin gained a passed d pawn, then a pawn, then a rook for a knight before retuirning the rook for a mating attack.
