July 5, 2001: Haagsche Zomer Competitie Round 3:

With K van der Meer and Croes not playing, Erwin got Zalme as his opponent in round 3. Erwin buckled the 45 minute deficit to win in 18 minutes as Zalme did not use his time advantage very well. Erwin developed his pieces normally and launched an attack on the Black King in the center. Erwin gained a passed d pawn, then a pawn, then a rook for a knight before retuirning the rook for a mating attack.

June 28, 2001: Haagsche Zomer Competitie: Round 2

Erwin neutralized the van Heet opening of Jan van der Meer with precise moves in the middle to win in 29 moves. This is the first time that Erwin accepted doubled pawns in the middlegame but used them to cramp the position of White. With the win, Erwin leads the tournament with 2/2. Henny arrived but did not play.
On this night. Mr. Warmenhoven asked me also if I had played Patrick de Bas and also my rating.

June 26, 2001: Vogelwijk Internie Round 32; Erwin is Champion of Vogelwijk 2001.

Erwin got a good position from an English opening against the Slav Defense of Alexander Henke, but played for the perpetual check. With the draw, Erwin stayed on top of the field, ahead of second running Henny Vischer, thus becoming the Champion of Vogelwijk 2001. Erwin decided to play externie for Vogelwijk in the coming season.

June 22-24, 2001: Den Haag Makelaars Associatie Weekend Toernooi

Erwin Casareno was seeded 26th but finished 30th after losing two consecutive games in his attempt to get the points from these games. He has the consolation of winning f 25 from the team competition which Haagse Toren 1 won.
Erwin did not attain the objective he has set to accomplish in this tournament, i.e. to score a good performance to boost his ratings.
Joost Michielsen played very well in this event, drawing agaist H. Jonkman and J. Nicholson. Rik Pronk scored very well too with 3.5/6, losing to Irwin int he last round.

June 21, 2001: Simultaan: Ooievaar

Erwin skipped the simul of English GM James Plaskett, to put more emphasis on his campaign in the Haagsche Zomer Competitie.

June 21-Aug 30, 2000: Haagsche Zomer Competitie Round 1 Schaakhaege

Erwin Casareno 2026 defeated E. van der Leij in the first round of the Haagsche Zomer Competitie. The game has a theoretical importance as it followed the book line up to the 6th move after which Erwin preferred 9.h4 instead of the popular 9.f4. Erwin was able to create a pawn majority on the queenside and keep the attacking lines open to the kingside. Erwin took the full point when van der Leij took the c-pawn and overlooked the Rd8+. He resigned after losing his queen.
Henny Vischer also won his game while Maarten Stolte and Hans Segers did not play.

June 19, 2001:Vogelwijk Internie Round 31:"Only one game stands between the Championship and me"

My opponent, Ben Spierings 1734, played his best line against the King's Indian (the 5.f4). So I did not use the 6...c5 used by Rik Pronk last March 4, 2000. Instead, I chose 6....c6. Ben played very well and established a knight outpost at d6. I tried to offer my inactive rook for a knight and two pawns but Ben did not take it, prefering instead pressurized play. I stood well after I developed my queen knight while Ben's pieces became disorganized. A rook exchange removed threats to my backrank and suddenly all my pieces are freed of defense. A wrong queen retreat allowed me to fork his queen and knight and Ben offered his hand in resignation.

With this win, I maintained my lead in the standings over Henny Visscher. but more importantly, it reduced the number of games, that i should be able to play, to just one.

June 18, 2001: Haags Open Rapid: Day 3 rounds 7-9:
Round 7: With my clock ticking at 16:58, I shaked the hand of Henk Albert and played 1.c4. His defense of 1...c6 did not confuse me as I played quickly with 2.d4 on board 1. My moves were played in blitz style, without hesitation and with only one thing in mind, "to eliminate chances for complications". Henk began to use his time (from 25 minutes)  as i got a good position. Soon our clock were almost identical at 13:00 and we began repeating knight moves which automatically led to a draw.
Round 8:
In board 3, my opponent was Casper Ruigt. As soon as i saw the pairings, I expected his d4 opening. How can I deviate from the game we played in Zoeteermeer last year, where he stole a pawn from me with a tactical combination? So I decided to use a flexible set-up where he will not be able to repeat that trick. My strategy was successful as he did not mount any attack, preferring to expand his queenside. I switched my pieces to the kingside, and mounted my heavy pieces along the h file, which he did not notice, as his attention is busy on this passed d pawn. A knight retreat gave me the time to mate his king.
Round 9:
In board 3, my last opponent was Ivo Schoonman. Theo Hartmann, Frans van de Bos and i were following the leader Alberts (6.5/8) with 6/8. If Frans beats Alberts, amd i beat Ivo, then theo has to beat Henny to reach 7 points.
With the white pieces, I used the English opening for this important game. In the opening, Ivo forced the exchange of queens. Ivo did not notice that i was threatening the b pawn after the elimanation of the knight at c5. Ivo tried to launch a counter attack in the kingside but i was able to defend against it. I took the point after Ivo did not see the mating attack with my knight and rook.

Henny won a pawn in the opening with fine tactical play and then got the full point. Frans could not avoid defeat att he hands of Alberts, and finished at 6/9, same as Theo.
