| Trevor's Birth Story Wednesday, June 17, 1992 I left for my regular doctor's appointment at about 3:00 PM. I was 42 weeks pregnant, and very uncomfortable. It was 6 days before my 16th birthday, and I couldn't think of a better present than my baby for my birthday, but I was already overdue, and wanted it to be over! When I was finally seen by the doctor, she told me that she wanted to do an ultrasound to see how big the baby was. During the ultrasound, she told me that the baby was about 9 pounds, and asked me if I was ready to have the baby today. She wanted to induce labor. I was scared, of course. My boyfriend (the baby's father) was at work, and his mother had brought me to my appointment that day, not knowing we were going to have the baby. I told the doctor that I wanted to be induced, but I didn't want them to do anything until my mom was there. The doctor agreed. I had my boyfriends mom go call my mom from a payphone to tell her what was going on, and to get her there as soon as possible. Meanwhile, I was taken to the prep room where I changed into a gown and given my IV. I kept saying, "Don't do anything until my mom gets here." I was so scared. The nurses all told me they were just getting me preped, and nothing would happen until my mom was there. My boyfriends mom returned to the room and told me that she had called my boyfriend and he had decided to stay at work until the end of his shift because the nurses advised her it would probably be several hours until anything happened, maybe even overnight. I guess he changed his mind, because he showed up at the hospital about 5 minutes after my mom got there. My pitocin was started and within 5 mintues, my contractions were already 30 seconds apart. I was in labor already!!! I requested some Demoral. At about midnight, 6 1/2 hours after my contractions started, they were still 30 seconds apart. Everyone had decided to go to the cafeteria to get something to eat, and even though I was afraid to be alone, I agreed. As soon as they started to walk out of the room, my water broke. I remember saying in a shakey, panicked voice, "Mom, I think my water broke." She called the nurse, and they transfered me to the labor room. A few minutes after my water broke, and I was in the labor room, I had to push. I started pushing, but nothing was happening. I contunied to push for hours, and nothing was happening. I kept telling my mom that something was wrong, the baby was stuck. She just said, "No, honey, he's not stuck." I insisted he was. At about 2:00 PM, on Thursday, June 18, 1992, the doctors decided I had been pushing too long, and wanted to prep me for an emergency C-Section. I was so tired, and had been in pain for so long (after the first request for Demerol, I didn't have any more drugs) I agreed. As they were wheeling me into surgery, I pushed again, and my mom saw his head crown. She said, "I see his head! I see his head!" At that point, they decided to let me try to deliver. We went to the delivery room, and I continued pushing. When I delivered his head, I heard the doctor say, "Ok, now let's cut the cord." That sounded weird, since I had only delivered his head, but I didn't get worried until she said to me, "Ok, now let's deliver the shoulders." I always thought you cut the cord after the whole baby was out! Anyway, it turned out that his cord was wrapped around his neck, and under his arm, on top of the fact that I had an unusually short cord anyway. I was right about him being stuck. Every time I would push him out, he was being sucked back in. At 2:40 PM, on Thursday, June 18, 1992, Trevor Lawrence was born, weighing in at 9 pounds, 0 ounces and 22 inches long. Total labor time was 21 hours and 10 minutes with 14 hours of pushing. |
