| Scott's Birth Story Since I have a history of having large babies, I was monitored every week the last month of my pregnancy. Ryan and I had, along with my doctor, decided that if the baby got to be 9 pounds, we would induce. I was due January 3, 1999, but had an ultrasound the week before Christmas that showed that he was indeed, a big baby. Since the office was going to be closed most of the week because of Christmas, I had to wait until the following week to get a date to be induced. I went in on Monday, December 28, and I was scheduled for induction the next day. Ryan's and my 1st wedding anniversary was December 30, so we were happy about getting our baby for our anniversary. My mom was going to be in the room with Ryan and I, so we picked her up at 6:00 AM on Tuesday, December 29. We had to be at the hospital by 6:30. It was strange knowing that I was getting ready to go have my baby, and I wasn't in labor. We got to the hospital, and again, I changed into a gown and got my IV hooked up. They started the Pitocin at about 7:30AM. I had some contractions, but I didn't feel them. I was telling jokes, and laughing a lot. The nurse came in every 30 minutes and up-ed my dose of Pitocin. I started feeling the contractions around 9:30AM. I asked for Stadol around noon. Things progressed normally, and I finally asked for an epidural about 12:30. I was told that the anesthesiologist was in surgery, but he would come in as soon as he got out. Well, doesn't it figure that I got ready to push before he got out of surgery? I was only dialated to about 7 1/2 when I had to push, and the nurses kept telling me not to push yet because it could make my cervix swell, and it would make delivery more difficult. The last thing I wanted to do was make things more difficult, so I tried my best not to push, but that baby wanted out! I was pushing against my will, crying the whole time, saying that I was trying not to push, but I couldn't help it. Finally, I was dialated to 9 1/2 and given the 'OK' to push, so I did. It took about 6 or 7 pushes (from what I remember) and he was born. Scott Riley was born to us at 2:35 PM on Tuesday, December 29, 1998. He weighed in at 9 pounds, 11 ounces, and was 21 1/2 inches long.... and he was 5 days EARLY!! |
