| The Adoption | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| We were ecstatic to receive our court date March 28, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. Our nerves were all a jitter and I spent a lot of time with Tanya to help her remain calm and hopeful. The effect of the previous family abandoning the adoption was extremely painful for Tanya and created a great fear in her memory bank of such a thing happening again. It was so important that we succeed for her sakeboth to provide her with a stable home and family to guide her into adulthood, but also for her mental health throughout her life. Its a horrible feeling to believe oneself to be unworthy of a family and all that goes with that. I didnt want her to spend her life wondering if shed ever belong. It was an oppressive feeling I knew only too well. We all showed up at court, only to hear that no one from the Ministry of Education had come. And so, not surprisingly, the judge postponed the hearing for a week. I see this all now as directed by our God. So much happened during that week that needed to happen God is so wise and perfect in His timing. On one front the judge was already biased against the case and against me (nothing personal, mind youIm just an American. The War with Iraq didnt help much.). He was angry with the Ministry of Education for alleged infractions of the law. A recent law determined that Tanyas name should have been removed from the orphan data bank when she came under Natashas guardianship. Also, many officials were asking Natasha and I to hide the fact that Tanya had been living with me, not her legal guardian. I couldnt think to do such a thingthe truth would come out one way or the other, Id rather volunteer it up front! Some were asking Natasha to create pre-dated documents to cover trails. It was pretty ugly. We conferred together and determined to remain true to God and to the law of this land. Wed done everything legally and honestly up to this point, no reason to stop now. |
