The Importance of Keeping a Flexible Spine

By age 30, blood supply to the disks gradually lessens. In the adult spine, all nourishment to the spine comes from movement. Fluids are drawn in and flushed out of the disks by stretching, lengthening and moving the spine in all directions. If the disks are not nourished, they start to shrink and lose their elastisity, becoming more prone to injury such as a hernia and pressure on the sciatic nerve root.

As the human body passes maturity, the disks gradually shrink, causing the body to lose height. However, for the health of the spine, careful stretching to lengthen and create space between the vertebrae is essential to allow the disks to return to a more youthful condition.
