| We have come a long way this year, in pre-season we weren't sure if we would even be able to field a team. It was identified early that it would be necessary to recruit outside the police station if we were to have the numbers. Fortunately every-one did their bit in finding potential players and you could arguably say that Peter McGaffin was the recruit of the season with his personal contribution of 691 runs and his input as our regular keeper including the Association batting aggregate and A reserve team of the year player.
We had many other contributors including Paul Velthuizens 37 wickets and the Association bowling aggregate, Century 21 Player of the Year and A reserve team of the year. We had a number of players do their part in producing a successful side in, Adrian Stephenson, Nick Todd, Bradley Masters and James Tudhope. Not only did we take on new players this year but we also found a new major sponsor in the Westland Hotel, who were very generous to East during the season and on grand final night. We appreciate Darren Beare opening up the Westland Hotel to become our "club rooms" and we look forward to the wind up and to our continued association. I wish to acknowledge our other long time sponsor and Patron in Phil Hart and the South Australian Aquaculture Management (home of the king fish industry). I thank all those who helped our captain Tim Mudge during the season proper as his lot is a very demanding one and may be not fully appreciated to the uninitiated. Success is usually measured by a premier-ship under the belt but this club also adds a great social side to its attributes. Notable events were the Westlands B.B.Q in the garden area where Darren Stacey almost scored with the 106 year old great-great grand-mother. Also the Stacey household B.B.Q evening and the McGaffins wind up premier-ship night, which effectively lasted for 7 days. We also had the B.B.Q on the hill in the second final. The East Whyalla Cricket Club acknowledges the Police Social Clubs contribution in providing the B.B.Q during the year and the Police Stations support including the team sergeants rostering skills to enable both the cricket side and the Whyalla Station to operate smoothly and successfully. Well done East premiers for 2005 including four premierships in six years is outstanding. Kyme Myers President |
