Haughley Castle, previously known as Hageneth or Hagenorth Castle, was of wooden construction and was one of only four ancient castles which was created by an "Honour", a royal gift distinct and superior to the general granting of manorial rights and lordships. The other castle created in this way were Bononia, Dover Castle and Peverell (Notts). A later one was created at St Osyth.
Hageneth Castle may have had this Honour conferred on it because of its ancient importance as Sitomagus, a large Roman Garrison of 3,000 men under the command of General Suetonius. The Romans may have chosen this for their garrison because of its earlier importnace as a Magus or Druid camp. The Haughley garrison had a quarter of the Roman garrison at Colchester and formed a central place for the Roman forces in Suffolk.
The Saxons are believed to have built the mound and it came into the ownership of Ralph de Broc, but was destroyed by Robert Earl of Leicester with 10,000 men on 13 October 1173 |

Haughley Moat/Castle. 24/06/2005. Start 10pm.
Sally, Ian and Kevin.
First investigation of the group.
No known previous paranormal activity, but a site with plenty of history.
Conditions - poor, very murky, light drizzle/rain, temperature quite mild, about 20/22c.
Wind - none/ extremely light.
Moon Phase - Waning Gibbous.
Very quiet. Near a road with light occassional traffic.
We felt reasonably settled at the site and there was little evidence of paranormal activity.
There was one corner within the site with a dip going down to an old oak tree where we all felt unsettled.
We captured some orbs here on digital camera, we will leave it up to the reader to decide whether they think this may be rain, insects etc.
Shortly after 12 midnight, the rain came down harder so we decided to conclude the investigation earlier than hoped.
With hindsight we felt we should have viewed the whole site and overlooked the castle area, rather than sitting with our backs to it.
Maybe that could be another investigation where we won't get wet! |
