If you are at work, tell them youre sick and leave. Go straight to the video store.
Drop everything and see these movies.
There are a few films that everyone should see, just because they live in the world. The films in the short list below are not only great (and no one can dispute it, lest they display their great ignorance) But they are part of the modern social language, part of the culture in which you live, and you should overcome your problems with Keanu and Stallone so you can get in touch with the poetry, because it's there, believe me. If you haven't seen all of these, drop everything right now and see them. Heres the list again
THE GODFATHER TRILOGY
The Godfather (1972)
The Godfather II (1974)
The Godfather III (1990)
Its created with the intimate language of America, its a story of 20th century kings and warriors and it is truly a Shakespearean epic. On top of the incredible story and visual mastery, these are some of the best actors youll ever see in one place.
ROCKY (1976)
Our culture has decided who Sylvester Stallone is, and in a way, his inaccurate public image has helped his career as an action star, but the truth is, Stallone is a brilliant writer (yes, he wrote the screenplay) and an amazing actor, not to mention a savvy businessman. If you dont know the story of how this movie got made, check
here and here. And watch again this subtle story of a man fighting to fulfill a dream and an uncommonly beautiful love story.
THE STAR WARS TRILOGY
Star Wars (1977)
The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Return of the Jedi (1983)
When Rod Serling started writing for the Twilight Zone, he was asked by a reporter So youre done writing anything important for TV? George Lucas was subject to the same attitudes about Science Fiction when he created this masterpiece and proved that not only is Science Fiction a viable medium to reinvent our greatest legends and myths about the Hero, but it is possibly the best medium to do so.
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981)
This movie possibly doesnt have quite the depth of soul as the other movies on this page, but it isnt supposed to. It merely conjures the entire history of going to the movies and why its so much damn fun. Its the highest achievement of film entertainment as a craft, pure delight and vicarious adventure from the first famous sequence to the still-chilling climax, not to mention the unforgettable tag image of the massive warehouse at the end. First moment to last, its the essence of movie magic.
MATRIX (1999)
Some could only see the flashy movie on the surface, others saw the mythic story underneath. Some claimed they saw the mythic story but thought it was trite. The latter havent truly seen what lies beneath this movie. Time is already telling as this innovative creation has subtly melded itself into the popular consciousness, this movie, like Star Wars, has changed movies, television and general popular culture for this generation.
CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON (2000)
Beautiful people, beautiful souls, beautiful photography, beautiful music, beautiful story. If ever there was pure, undistilled poetry on the screen, here it is. And poetry with real teeth. Who would have thought you could make the fight scenes in The Matrix look slow and clunky? Ang Lee gets extra points for making couch potato Americans forget theyre watching a dreaded foreign language film.
Once youve seen these, we can continue.
