2. Guide reproduction wisely, improving fitness and diversity.
This Guide is most often placed next to Hitler and his plan of a master race. Hitler believed that only one race and once race only needed to survive. On the surface and taken by itself Guide 2 may look like that plan revisited, however we will discover this guide is tempered by the other guides. Further this guide has a key word added to promote all races, all cultures all peoples, that word is Diversity. This is the next step to Tenant 1 and is the means provided to attain the Goal of a balanced population to nature.
Guide 2 is the means of reaching a sustainable number, It doesn't call for death camps, doesn't call for some minority to pick and choose who gets to live, it does not tell us who is the rightful heir to the earth. It tells us that through wise reproduction practices we can improve our species.
No government has yet to come about which has been successful at controlling who does or does not have children. We, as individuals are the only ones who can decide if we do or do not reproduce. Our decision is mostly guided by our want for a child or family, rarely, if ever is the ability or the wisdom of that choice considered. In many cases there are parents who knowing full well that they are carrying genetic time bombs, will take the risk and have a child. Many others have no clue to their genetic heritage and make a blind leap of faith and go a head and have kids.
Guide 2 is helpful tool in providing the next generation with better health and may lead to the removal of some diseases which are not fixable by our medical sciences and which lead to the offspring suffering life long debility and illness. Today we know and understand that there are many genetically linked disorders, ones which the parent passes on to their offspring. In many cases these are passed on while the parent knows that there is a genetically linked disorder.
Personal selfishness is expressed when a parent decides to have a child, knowing that the child will suffer from the same genetically linked disorder. With the advent of human genome mapping we can detect the hereditary genes of many diseases; we can, through informed facts decide if we will have a child or not based on our genetic information. Perhaps in time these will be cured and cease to plague humanity, however presently there are no cures.
EXAMPLE: I personally have a genetic disorder. Thus I elect to not have children to prevent this disorder from being suffered by another human being. This is a sacrifice; this is placing the needs of another over my own selfish wants. I can not in good consciousness elect to have a child knowing that I will pass on a hereditary disorder which will reduce their quality of life. It is unfair to them, and to society as a whole, to add a burden which through choices and elective contraception does not need to be there.
This is the suggestion of Tenant 2. It is not placed there to give Government or society the right to pick and choice who does or does not have children. It provides the individual with a guide to sensible and the most reasonable understanding that we can control the well being of humanity as a whole if we understand ourselves.
And diversity.
I believe there is a failure to understand that diversity is what makes humanity great. Nazis were against diversity, thus if this particular tenant upheld a "perfect race" then there would be a good reason to find fault with this tenant - However we find that this tenant seeks to maintain diversity in our species - meaning there is no one single race of human which is better than the rest - meaning that the Author of these guidelines knows and understands that it is our diversity, our many races, cultures, traditions which makes our species wonderful.
The whole tenant seeks to remind us that it is our choices as individuals and a species which can alter the human condition - SHOULD WE ELECT TO. We can remove disabilities and infirmaries which are genetically linked through selective breeding, by making individual choices to not inflict our children with the same genetic errors which we ourselves suffer from. We have the ability through knowledgeable and informed choices to improve our species through actively electing to break the chains of inherited illnesses. We have the duty as a species to make certain that our diversity, that thing which produces cultures and people and which is hated by so many is preserved.
With the advent of genetic sciences we may be well on our way to finding cures for many genetic illnesses, but there will be some which the only cure is to prevent their being handed down. Should we as responsible individuals elect to not have children, we become key instruments in the permanent cure for certain diseases. We also can insure that the next generation and the generation after that will have a better quality of life.
It is our duty and our cherished wish that our children have all the things we didn't, that their lives be better than ours. This is natural and right and is what has brought about our civilization and our progress. I elect to not have children so my genetic errors are not passed on to them. I elect this out of the love of the unborn, the desire that no one else suffers from my genetically linked disorder, that no one else must face the terrible choice of deciding to have a child knowing that they will inflict upon that innocent life pain and illness and a lowered quality of life.
It is a reasonable choice, a logical choice, though a hard one to make, it is the rational, reasonable alternative that works and goes a long way at insuring a brighter tomorrow for my species. Yes perhaps I am denying the world its next Beethoven or Einstein, I could be also denying the world its next Hitler or Manson.
The potential for life is not life, and to say that by not having a child I am denying the world one thing is unreasonable and calls for a belief that my child is going to be somehow better than other children Then place that against the fact that my child will be born with a genetic defect which will impair, her or his life.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
Nuclear bombs were dropped and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were utterly destroyed all for a lack of understanding of the word "Honor". The Japanese culture and language has nuances to its language which provided an honorable and acceptable manner for them to surrender to the USA. The USA misinterpreted that word to mean "No Surrender" thus hundreds of thousands of people were victims of the nuclear age.
Oops, live and learn, I guess this was far better than having one language spoken and understood by all.
Many political and social problems arise out of the misunderstandings of language between peoples and cultures. The diversity and nuances of words and language can lead to terrible mistakes on personal levels to the Global level.
This Third Tenant suggests that the whole world has a common language, one which all men and women understand and know and speak, thereby removing these errors in translation and providing us all with the ability to communicate no matter where we go. This Tenant does not suggest that we drop or leave our native tongues. Instead it calls upon each and every one of us to become bilingual, at least.
There are cities which have cultural sections to them, where the people speak and maintain their native language. Many of those people learn the local language or national language and will switch from one to the other depending on who they are talking to. Is it so hard to ask that each nation maintains its native traditions and language while adopting a common global language to ease the traveler, or the political tensions? |
