Board Business

A letter was read from Lisa Emling (ex-officio member) stating she had received the letter from the board concerning voting power and meetings. She asked that better notice be given for meetings and an agenda sent to her. Carlton Doerner is to draft a letter with the years remaining meeting dates and an agenda to give to her.

Discussion was made concerning reappointments for the board. There is concern that Vanessa Fleming may not live in the city of Du Quoin and therefore may not be eligible for the board. Fleming and Emma Williams who were invited guests were explained to about the function of the board and about the financial situation of the board. Other names were mentioned for consideration to recommend appointment for the board. They were Steve Marek, Chuck Smith, and Elizabeth Steiler.

Park Business

Noted by Linda Murphy that 3 gallons of paint were purchased for use by the 5 Star group at their earth day clean up in the park.

A motion was made and passed to have the faulty playground equipment at the park replaced so they meet safety requirements. (Baxter, Pettifrod)

Pool Business

All scheduled work at the pool stemming from the grant has been completed.

Darryl and Wanda Thorpe fixed the boys bathroom at the pool for cost of supplies ($150.00). It took about 2 weeks to complete. Some of the work entailed fixing a leak in the roof and repairing all the rafters that had collapsed. It was recommended that the board offer free admittance to the pool to them and send a thank you card.

Paul Miller was able to get the vacuum for the pool repaired and operating again. The current one is over 20 years old. A new one has been priced in the 2000 - 3000 dollar range.

A motion was made and passed to set the hours, wages, season length, and rules for the 2001 pool season. All items were remaining the same as last year except for the Pool Manager salary. The pool manager salary will return to $4500 plus transportation. However this year mileage must be kept and submitted to receive compensation for travel. (Eastman, Baxter)

Received two applications for the pool manager position. One from Paul Miller and one from Tracey Reid. A motion was made and passed to hire Paul Miller. (Eastman, Pettiford)

Paul was informed by the board as to his salary and the hours and rules for the 2001 season.

Paul Miller mentioned that to much chlorine was being used at the pool and he was going to cut back on use during non swimming hours. Paul said he will be doing some painting to finish up prep work for the pool. He also mentioned that the concrete steps crumbled apart when they were removed from the pool to do work to the floor. Paul is to contact Roy Anderson about having the steps replaced. Paul mentioned that the red cross is now teaching how to work a defibrillation machine when one is available.

Betty Eastman asked that the lifeguards be encouraged to wear their shirts and use the umbrellas to help cut down on skin cancer risks.

The board needs to begin a search to find a grant to help meet handicap accessibility guidelines.

It was noted that the Garden Club planted flower beds at the pool.

End Meeting
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM.

The Park Board will meet next on Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. at Du Quoin City Hall.
