DAY ONE |

On September 22-24, 2000 ... I, along with 2700 other courageous individuals, again covered 60 miles ... on foot ... in the fight against BREAST CANCER. |

|
My beloved drops us off at Lake Sidney Lanier around 6:15 am. Lisa and I get our stuff in the appropriate gear truck and pose for an early morning photo ... thinking ARE WE READY for this walk?
Only time will tell ... the next three days, that is. |

6:30 am is not when most people want to hear a motivational speaker or two. But for these 2700 bright-eyed and bushy-tailed walkers it's just what the doctor ordered. There's loud music, calisthenics, a good breakfast and motivational speakers.

With Tropical Storm Helene pouring gallons of water over us, it soon became necessary to put on the ponchos we so carefully packed in our fanny-packs.
It rained ALL DAY. Sometimes only a light mist ... other times more of a torrential downpour. We walked from 7:30 am until 3:45 pm ...21 miles ... in the rain. And, you know what? We were singing while doing it. Not nearly as well as Gene Kelly did (and he was running a high grade fever of 103 degrees at the time), but we were singing in the rain.
So, the next time you hear someone complain, "My car ran out of gas and I had to walk 3/4 mile to the next exit in the rain!" You can say, "Oh Yeah?!?! Well, I know of 2700 people who walked 21 miles during a tropical storm ... AND LIKED IT!!!" |
